Hi
We are planning a ski wedding for next winter as don't want the usual British wedding and thought it would be good to combine into our ski holiday.
Done some research and seems like Austria is the easiest place to do it, most people seem to go to Zell am See, the trouble is it sounds as though there are loads of people doing it there and we would like a smaller resort and something a bit more personal but with a good ski area. So we are looking for a ski area that is good for intermediates, beginners and winter walking to keep all the guests happy! Also a nice friendly hotel with good food, ideally would like a wedding in a mountain hut so I can do a comedy ski run in a frock!
Any suggestions greatly received.

Bardonecchia would seem to tick all the boxes you require and also has a direct train to Turin for non skiers to visit on a free day. Not sure about where you could get married though. Most european countries are quite strict on where you can actually get married. if you google Italian wedding planners you will find lots of small companies who can point you in the right direction. I would say the majority of italian Resort would fit what you are looking for tow others could be Macunaga and Champolux both lovely towns/villages with quite good skiing but other things to do as well.

We got married in Austria back in 2004. Mountains are a major passion in our lives, and combined with the desire to do something a bit different we decided on an austrian civil ceremony. We didn't want to go down the TO wedding package route and being a fluent german speaker it was easy to organise something ourselves. We decided to stay at a fab hotel in a small Carinthian village just down the road from the resort of Heiligenblut. With 45 of us we took over the entire place. It was a great hotel called the Schlosswirt located in the village of Großkirchheim. Most skied but some older members of the party went cross country skiing, or walked and visited the nearby town of Lienz. Guests could opt for curling, horse riding or ice climbing for some of the apres ski activities.
The hotel was fantastic and the service was very personal, food was divine, and the whole place suited our requirements perfectly. There is awesome terrain available for intermediates and beginners are catered for on the village nursery slopes. Plenty of walking available with stunning scenery too. The guy who owns and runs the hotel is also a mountain guide so can organise all sorts of adventures! Feel free to PM me if you want to know more.

sorry cant offer any advice but I think it is a fab idea. I came across a wedding picture last week on FB taken on a Piste in Zell am See. If I can ever persuade my DH to renew our vows it will take place in Austria.

I've seen an entire wedding party getting out of the cable car at the top of the Grande Motte in Tignes before - the bride had her ski trousers on under he white dress and the groom his DJ only with black ski pants. I think in France, you have to do the civil ceremony and can then do the church blessing afterwards. There are very pretty churches in Tignes Les Boisse and in Val D'Isere if that appeals to you.

I went to a friend's wedding in Banff a few years ago. They got married in ski gear on the slope above the lodge in Norquay.
They then skied off with 'Just married' on their backs!
There was a meal in the lodge afterwards, and it was really quiet and personal. They loved it.

we travelled up the gondola at Lake Louise one very sunny day with part of a wedding party. The bride followed shortly thereafter. The photos would have been stunning with the Lake and the Chateau Lake Louise hotel as the backdrop across the valley

Thanks for all the ideas, Canada sounds lovely but we defo want to stick with Europe to try and make it as easy as possible for the family and friends.
Juliad - thanks so much for your tips - that is exactly the sort of thing we are looking for so I will do some research!! The future father in law is fluent in german so can get him on the case with the phone calls!

I have no idea what the legal/admin formalities are but you could try Champoussin (Switzerland), it is a small village with stunning views of the Dents du Midi, access to the Portes Du Soleil (Avoriaz <1hr on skis), 90 minutes from GVA by car, and there is a small chapel on the hill literally against the side of the piste so you could "ski away" from there. There is one large hotel in the village, lots of apartments, and a couple of good places to eat, more hotels in Val D'Illiez fifteen minutes down the hill, pm me if you need more info.

There is a snow village near Yllas called Lanio http://www.snowvillage.fi/. They have a small chapel - you can arrive by sleigh, also a small church in Levi that holds weddings

I was bridesmaid at a wedding in Levi and it was brilliant - everyone loved it, including non-skiers who went snow shoeing and sleigh riding and the northern lights were out too. The bride and groom weren't religious so the evening ceremony and reception were in a solid yhurt-type thing in the middle of a snow plain, lit with torches and candles and heated by a huge open fire stove in the middle of the room, on which the really good food was cooked. There were about 30 of us there and it was completely lovely.

On the French church front... Religious weddings aren't legal, so you need to have a civil ceremony first before you go to the church and unless at least one of you wants to spend 30 days in France first, it's much easier to do that civil ceremony in the UK. We've got a couple thinking of getting married here (it's where they got engaged) so I've been looking into the red tape of it all... I think some couples would find it a bit weird doing that - though for this couple it works as they'll invite all the olds to the UK ceremony who won't come over to France for the blessing and booze-up.
We actually also had another couple here a few weeks' ago who live full-time in Geneva (but were Swedish and Canadian) asking if we did weddings - I can't remember what the reasoning was but the bride-to-be was adamant she wasn't getting married in Switzerland... might have been because she would be obliged to change her name or something... (presumably if she carried on living in Switzerland)

Some friends I met on a ski holiday got married in beautiful Colfosco in the Italian Dolomites:
I think they and their guests stayed at the Hotel Mezdi and they helped with arrangements locally. I don't know anything about the legalities and logistics of the ceremony, except that it was possible.
It's certainly an awesomely scenic spot, good skiing too as it's on the Sella Ronda 400+km linked area, nice runs for all abilities, lots of walking/snowshoeing and loads of lovely mountain restaurants also.
Might be worth investigating!!

luigi, looks lovely. My friends got married in Tuscany last year because they were travelling from Oz and so didn't have time to do all the red tape stuff in France (where they had originally planned to do it) so I think Italy must make it easier.

Gryphea, yes you can get married at the Eagle's Eye in Kicking Horse. Awesome location. And you would have to give great credit to any bride who then hiked Superbowl and skiied down Terminator in her wedding dress.

SkierAl, I don't know if you want a church wedding or just a civil ceremony, but both Wengen and Zermatt to my knowledge have English Churches (and both resorts have great scenery and I think would appeal to the non skiing guests).

SkierAl, as I understand it getting married in Switzerland if you are a Brit is not a difficult task, as Alastair Pink and telford_mike mention both Wengen and Zermatt have English churches if you want a church service, however by law you must have a civil service first, I'm told the most common way in Wengen for this to occur is for the bride, groom and a couple of witnesses to go down the valley (I think to Lauterbrunnen) where the civil service is performed before going back up to Wengen, getting changed and joining all the guests for a church service.
In Switzerland you must have various forms filled out ahead of time but the Swiss Embassy can I believe provide those

There was a couple married in Saalbach at the beginning of January - the whole group stayed at the British-run Pension Enzian, organised ski lessons for the beginners, had the wedding dinner in a mountain restaurant accessed only by piste-machine and then tobogganed down. Sounds fun.

SkierAl & D G Orf, my (British) daughter got married in Geneva as a non-resident and the paperwork is straightforward, but does take a little time to process. Problems started when I took the groom to the hotel de ville to discover that we should be at the mairie (my Swiss friends didn't know the difference, but one is for the canton and the other is the city, and only one does marriages!! - not sure I've got them the right way round) We legged it across town to the right place and got there in time, waited for my wife and daughter and they left the wedding rings in the taxi! Alls well that ends well, however, and they are happily married now.

Hi folks,
we got married in Austria in March & it was perfect. The venue was the Unterhofalm near Filzmoos, we were too busy skiing to visit the venue in the run up to the wedding - so we were relying on the venue recommendation from my parents (which can be a bit of a lottery), but it was perfect. We were pretty hands off in the planning - our wonderful wedding planner arranged everything perfectly - the carriages up to the alm, the musicians (brilliant), the beautiful flowers. The staff at the alm were so lovely, there was even a little corner set up for the children to play in.
We really had to have a wedding planner to organise the paperwork, especially as my German is a little "flakey". The Unterhofalm recommended Ingrid from Panorama Tours, Salzburg, who was excellent.
We stayed in Filzmoos village - the Dachstein Hotel. Again, they were lovely there, really accommodating for the children, & the food was excellent, & on our wedding night we came back to a lovely surprise in our room. Other guests stayed in various accommodation round the village, all of which seemed lovely. Filzmoos is a lovely village for this sort of thing, the ski area is a bit on the small side, but it meant that the skiers, walkers & sledgers could all meet up for lunch & drinks round the village & wherever you went you were bound to bump into someone else from the wedding party.
Sorry if this comes across as a bit of an advert for all everyone involved in the wedding, but I still have to pinch myself to remind that it was actually my wedding it was so amazing. & all for a bargain price, which appeals to me as a Scot & the new Mrs SkierAl as a Yorkshire lass.

Hiya,
Yes there was lots of red tape. We got married before the internet had really taken off (1992), but we got some help from a specialist travel agent (now long-gone).
I spent a lot of time translating documents into High German, and these translations had to be certified.
Brits can't actually get married in Wengen (same goes for most Swissies too). We had a civil ceremony at the zivilstandsamt in Lauterbrunnen, though I think you have to go to Interlaken nowadays.
We managed (with the agreement of the Bishop of Gibraltar) to get permission from the Intercontinental Church Society for a blessing in the English church in Wengen immediately after the civil ceremony.
In the event it all went very well. Somehow Swissair had discovered that we were getting married, so we got nice upgrades and champagne on the way out - it wouldn't happen with eastJet!
