Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi there, just looking for some advice. This is the first ski holiday I'm going on organising myself (just finished uni) and not really sure about accommodation.
I want to go skiing in January for about 4 weeks and I will be meeting up with a friend who will be doing a season, although he hasn't confirmed a place yet, so not exactly sure where I will be going. I've started doing some research etc and I'm not really sure about what kind of things will be available. As my friend will likely be in staff accommodation, I'm going to need to be staying on my own for most of the time, might have some of our other friends down for a week and could get a larger apartment then, but other than that not too sure about what to do.
I'm not looking to work at all but still looking for something fairly inexpensive, so any ideas about what kind of things I should go about doing once I know where I will going would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Matt

@blenheim34, My advice - First find out where you are going, then contact the tourist office in that location and also come back on here and advise where you are going to be and people can then offer advice. Other than that its a bit like "how longs a piece of string"?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Welcome to snowHeads @blenheim34
As @Markymark29 said: you don't really have enough info yet to move forwards.
Depending upon where your friend ends up, you could be struggling to find anything "fairly inexpensive" especially on your own. Other places would be a relative doddle.
Beware, some companies confirm very late where their staff are to be stationed - sometimes only days before they go.

@blenheim34, Yes welcome. Austria is pretty good fro single accom opportunities, France tends to be more difficult, but that's a huge generalisation, first find out where you are going and then come back, there'll be loads of advice on here.
One other point - if you can stay slightly out of resort you'll get cheaper accommodation, and also suggest you get connected to a seasonaire type group via Facebook etc once you know resort, they often know places slightly outside town, on bus routes (so they can hopefully get to work), and you may be able to get a room in a larger more cost effective apartment.....just depends how fussy you are I guess!!

Welcome to sH @blenheim34, a difficult one - but there are lots of resort specialists on here, so when the plan firms up, bump the topic with an edited title giving the resort name to attract one of the right folks. It really comes down to detailed resort knowledge, for instance in Tignes there are a couple of lodges which take singlies, on a single basis or a share, think up market youth hostel. There is stuff there - its just finding it.....

Listen first to to@Markymark29, then to @admin, then again to @Markymark29, and also to@chocksaway,
That should really do.

Try to find a mate to join you. Tiny studios can be pretty cheap. Timing will be critical. If you go out after the expensive new year week and leave before the main season (first Sat in February if in France) you could well get something reasonable. But location will make a huge difference.

In a major ski resort you will pay tourist prices + a single room supplement. But stay in a major town close by and the chances of finding a room in a shared house are good.
EG Bourg-Saint-Maurice and not Les Arcs. Try the tourist office and the French equivalent of Craig's List.

If its Chamonix there are hostels. Worth looking at UCPA centres in other French resorts.

Hi,
I've been thinking about a similar arrangement, without the tie of a seasonaire mate.
I could be up for going in on a place 30th Dec - 15th Jan. Possibly to the 22nd if work allows.
Feel free to get in touch if and when you'd like to discuss further if interested.
Another Matt, 25.

If your mate is working the season he should be best placed to find you something - get him to ask around when he gets to resort.

You have to book youth hostels really early, unless you are going to obscure Swiss resorts. (not really obscure, but not in most tour operators target list)
You can stay in Formula 1 for fairly cheap, especially if you can share a room with one or two others and share transport to nearby resorts. Only issue with formula 1 is you have to share showers, baths with a corridor of people rather than have one in your own room.
Albertville has one, and it has ETAP too and some others too. Usually you can just turn up there, and get a room if you go when reception is open.
(it seems the F1 in Alberville has now closed, and the ETAP has changed its name to Ibis Budget)

I paid £160 for a week (by myself) in a spacious studio (with kitchen/dining area/ balcony and en suite bathroom) in Chatel earlier this year.
That was the price of the room regardless of whether there were 1 or 2 people staying there. £160pw is very reasonable considering that included a 'single supplement'.
If you're going to be staying in a room by yourself I would suggest searching for studio rooms rather than single hotel rooms (which are quite rare).

Again, this varies hugely depending where you go.
In France single rooms in hotels are indeed relatively rare but in Italy or Austria most hotels and guest houses will have some. Some don't even charge much of a premium for them.

Try phoning some of the tour operators direct, some offer driving or accommodation only options so you could combine a few 'holidays' together to make up your 4 weeks. January is a fairly cheap time to go so you might find booking through a TR is cheaper than direct with the hotel. I usually ski solo and it's difficult to get cheap accommodation, Italy and Austria seem to be the best options as has already been pointed out.
