Details are sketchy but a British transfer coach is on fire with trapped passengers on the descent from Alpe d'Huez at the moment. It appears the brakes gave out on the descent and the coach hit a cliff and burst into flames.

3 dead, 4 seriously injured: http://www.lexpress.fr/actualite/societe/fait-divers/au-trois-morts-et-quatre-blesses-grave-dans-accident-de-car-pres-de-l-alpe-d-huez_1240801.html

What an horrific way to go.

Confirmed by Le Dauphine, quoting the Prefecture "16h30. Le bilan vient d'être révisé, toujours par la préfecture: un mort."

Wondered if it might be so was curious that the Figaro specified they had been out for week - may have been an assumption.

That was my first thought, although the reports seem to say it's after a week's holiday, I wasn't so sure. Poor kids...

Very sad.
After seeing the news here on Snowheads I went to the BBC website, but there was nothing posted until 15:43, the BBC seem to have been a bit slow in picking up on the story.

boredsurfin, From that article "The bus is reported to have been transporting passengers back to the UK following a week-long break."
and
"Reports: Coach went over a cliff after breaks failed"
So not only did the Daily Fail get the details about those affected being holidaymakers wrong (if Lizzard is correct), their spelling standards leave something to be desired as well...

Thoughts with everyone involved
Having been up and down that road a few times, there are a couple of places I really wouldn't want to go over the edge, or even into one of the surrounding walls

The Telegraph does at least correctly report that the bus hit the cliff rather than the Mail's sensationalist claim of going over it - if a bus went over a cliff at Alpe d'Huez there wouldn't be any survivors.

Yeah - most of the UK workers leaving this week at some point. The last lot of TO punters went home at the weekend so it's just been admin, cleaning up etc this week. She also knew the girl who died at the start of the season when she climbed under the covers into the swimming pool so it's been a season bookended by tragedy
