So after discovering that colliding with the edge of the piste is painful, and being rescued by a piste basher is awesome, I'm now back home with a minor ankle fracture. Need to have a further X-Ray here on Friday so going to go via A&E as my GP wouldn't even pass for useless. Anyone have any advice??
I'm a fit sports person, getting round on crutches is no bother although sitting with my foot elevated is so frustrating I do know it just needs doing. Is there anything I should be asking the hospital on Friday??There was no suggestion of surgery in the Visp hospital, very much conservative treatment.

@lampygirl,
Change your GP, hospitals are not great at coordinating things good GP's are.

@lampygirl,
Ask for early physio referral, you may be able to start even whilst in the boot.

gp should be able to refer you directly to the fracture clinic, or they can in my area.

We phoned our local hospital from Switzerland and the lady I spoke to in the fracture clinic said she couldn't book me in but I could go through A&E. My GP on the other hand can give me an appointment next week, to get an appointment with the fracture clinic, but this isn't any good because I have been told I need to be seen a week after the injury. Our walk in centre is also located at the same hospital as A&E and the fracture clinic, so it's all much of a muchness.
It's safe to say the process in Switzerland, all covered by the ehic except the piste basher, seemed smooth and well organised, but getting into the UK system is an absolute pain.

@lampygirl, have you asked GP for emergency appointment? Walking into A&E really isn't the kind of care you need right now.

@lampygirl, Have you tried phoning your GP and telling them that you require an appointment in the fracture clinic within a week ?
You may not even have to see them to arrange the appointment if you explain what happened.

So I called the GP again yesterday, still haven't been called back as promised, though the recpetionist did say I'd probably have to go in or post them the paperwork for them to process a referral. Called A&E in the evening instead of going in, and they booked me straight in, couldn't have been more helpful. I asked about going via the walk in/minor injuries centre instead while on the phone to free up A&E for future reference, but the lady said they can only send you over to A&E anyway if they can't treat it there.
All this has proved is that even across the country the best way of going about these things varies.
I'm going to ask for a physio referral while I am there, at least then if it takes a couple of weeks to come through its not wasted time.

I just been on the phone to my GP practice regarding Physio post operation. The answer was if I need to get physio within next 4 weeks, I should go private.... I did see my GP 3 weeks ago though for the referral, so 7 weeks in total. I will go private as I am left with no option, even though I can not afford, but at least it will save me some dignity and I will get the support needed after my operation. Shame, seeing that I have been paying my NI contribution for 15 years now and the only time I need NHS help, they are turning their back on me.

@ksenia, I suspect your NI payments over the last 15 years will not even pay for a fairly simple operation. The "stamp" barely scrapes the surface of the huge cost of healthcare, which is met (or not) out of general taxation. The mark of a civilized society is how it looks after its vulnerable citizens. It's arguable whether there is enough money in the NHS to meet that obligation.

So 2 weeks in and I am non weight bearing for another week but am able to start some movement exercises with the ankle this week, just gentle flexion and extension type movements to help alleviate any stiffness. The fracture is stable and has stayed in place so prognosis is looking good. I have a physio referral to the NHS physio for 4 weeks time, but not knowing what they are specialised in, I am also looking to have a few private sessions with someone knowledgeable in either ice skating or skiing (my 2 sports and a lot of the movements I have found to be quite similar). Anyone have any recommendations of places in/around MK who might be worth approaching?

@lampygirl, You could try the Blackberry Clinic at Walnut Tree. I think they treat quite a few people with sports injuries. My daughter went for a private appointment with a doctor there a couple of years ago, although her problem was related to an earlier operation on her spine. However, the doctor, a skier, recommended that she should make an appointment with their physiotherapist and mentioned that she (the physio) usually spent the winter season working in a ski resort.
