Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saallbach/Megeve

Hi all, just wondered if anyone can help. we are wanting to visit there on feb 25th for a week i have read a few things about it and it seems highly regarded but i have a few questions. We went to wengen last year and loved it, we were going to go back this year but i do like trying new places so can you tell me is this a a good place, is it best to stay in saallbach or hinterglem which is nicer, also i read that it get gets very rowdy later at night with drunken people, how bad is this as a really rowdy place doesn't appeal although we do like apres ski but not when it seems like you are in a typical english city centre that is full of rough chavs! please tell me it's not like this, we love having a good time and taking in the atmosphere but rough yobby people err no thanks. I have seen a package deal for the hotel berger sport and the panther for about £715 per person half board is that a good deal or is it better doing a DIY? We just love cruising runs nothing steep or scary as Linda will freak out, wengen was great for this. I appreciate any feedback as i need to get something sorted out fairly soon oh i nearly forgot is it fairly good for snow as it is quite low isn't it. I have just added Megeve as this is another place that i like the sound of and all the above general questions apply not many packages go here so is this one a definate DIY?
Thanks
Andy

andyarmitage, I have visited Megeve, only on a day trip though, but at the same time as you wish to travel. As a resort it oozed charm, horse drawn carriages etc, and we shall definately be going back end Feb/March. The pistes should be ideally suited for you too, as I am also a red run cruiser. snowHead

That isn't to say that Saalbach wouldn't suit your needs either, given a choice of country, I would opt for Austria as my preference. snowHead

andyarmitage, Megève is very French - not overrun with British chavs or hooray henries - just a few thoroughly decent sorts like me! snowHead There's no building over four stories, which precludes the pile-em-high, sell-em-cheap operators. There are a few independent British operators in Megève, such as Simon Butler Skiing who specialise in instructional holidays.

Stanford sking also use Megeve. I've been twice and have always had good conditions, something to do with being in the shadow of Mt Blanc. Lots of tree line sking, very pretty, charming resort. Chic but not like Courcheval, its where the French go.
Had some great food. Never been too busy either.

andyarmitage, I can asure that Saalbach is not full of drunken yobs! It can get lively but not in a typical 'Saturday night average UK High Street' kind of way, more like 'cheesy dancing in your ski boots' and it is generally confined to a couple of places and you'll find some much quieter bars also.

The skiing is fantastic, plenty of wide, long blues and reds, lots of choice and you are unlikely to get caught out on a steep run. The hotels are of a good standard, mountain restaurants are plentiful and reasonably priced. We're going back for a second time the same week you are looking at and staying at the Berger Sport. The snow is excellent at the moment, something like twice the average for the time of year. Austria has seen the best snow so far this season in Europe so this is the year to make the most of it. Don't worry about the altitude, it's less of an issue in Austria than say France due to certain weather patterns and less rocky terrain, where a lower base will suffice in Austria.

hayley t, Once more, I find myself in total agreement with you. For mile-hungry and shock averse intermediates i can think of nowhere better I have skied.

hayley t, Chris Bish, I "third" that recommendation. I'd go back tomorrow if it were not for my 12 week old daughter. I will be booking for next year.
Hayley, enjoy the scandinavian DJ in the Berger Sporthotel - Karioake gone very wrong!!! could you not get back in the Bauer this year?

Peter B, there is nothing better than a bit of European cheesy music (well for one week a year anyway!)

The Bauer was fully booked for the week we wanted, and this was back in March last year when we tried to book. It sounds like someone else has discovered the jem of a hotel it is! The Berger doesn't look as cosy but appears a bit more lively so I'm sure we'll manage!

andyarmitage, that's about what we are paying. Saalbach is a bit more expensive than other resorts but you get what you pay for and last time the food was great and the room standard was also very good - albeit a different hotel but also a 4 star.

As far as the circus is concerned, you can get round quite comfortably in a day. there is another decent day going over to Leogang. You can get both ways except for the bit at the bottom of the 7k run number 2. All the same, it all links better than it looks on the piste map and you can do long or short days as you wish. We never used a bus. snowHead
