About a month ago I had a bit of an incident. (Note to self: do not try to swallow surfboards in big surf) Multiple fractures to cheek/eye socket/sinus, 3hrs surgery, metal plates, synthetic eye socket floor, 50+ stitches later and all that's visible externally is a three inch scar running from mid nose, down the 'smile line' crease in my cheek for the most part and then turning vertically down through my top lip. The Maxfax crew did a lovely neat job of nailing my face back on and I'm delighted with the way it's healing, visually unobtrusive and neat.
AIUI it's normal for scars to contract as they heal/age and this is staring to happen. It's beginning to pull my lip up a bit on one side, so I'm just developing a bit of an Elvis look. I've just started moisturising and massage (someone suggested bio-oil today which I'll nip out and get tomorrow). Does anyone have any tips or suggestions as to how to reduce/combat this?

@rogg, ouch ouch ouch
I know nothing about scars and their care, but I saw a programme about the victims of acid burns in Pakistan who had specialist pressure bandages to reduce scarring.

@rogg, Ow! I've spent a bit of time (and money) on reducing post surgical scarring over a fair amount of time and used bio-oil to very good effect. There are a number of scar reduction products available off the shelf in Boots too although I have to say that I didn't really think they had that much effect for me they get good reviews from others. If you don't mind smelling like a girl then Frangipani Oil by Elemis worked wonders for me, definitely better than bio-oil really. I think that the basis for all of the products around is keeping the scar well moisturised and mobile with a bit of daily massage.

agree with @homphomp and her specialist knowledge or massage and moisure. I used bio oil, but the best result was from time - mine was not very noticeable after 2 years.
Sounds a horrendous accident - heal well.

By Maxfax, do you mean Max Factor the famous Hollywood make up artist or maxillo-facial? Both could apply, although Mr Factor might make you a little green.

I have used bio-oil on a number of scars and whilst I would say it helps, it is actually impossible to know because time alone may have done just as good a job.
Hope you heal well.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts. Bio-Oil purchased and applied, I now have a hint of lavender hanging around me, very 'grandmas toilet'.

this thread gets more interesting by the post.........
As far as make up goes, if only it would make that much of an improvement .
Like I said it really is healing well and once I've grown some new nerves so I can feel my cheek/top lip/nose again, I'll be fine.

You know it makes sense.

An old neighbour of mine was in a gas explosion and had terrible burns and scars. His wife kept applying Royal jelly and his scars allmost disappeared completely but not sure if it would work on surgical scars.

As this is a very deep scar, and in a place where muscles are very active; while topical treatment may help a bit you might want to investigate a course of botox injections. It helps by weakening the underlying muscles ability to contract. It'd need repeat injections but it might help the effects you're getting more effectively.

TGF beta 2 but it may harm you in many other ways.
Ps this is a joke. I worked on reducing tendon scar tissue years ago but I'm not advocating you do this.

I've hear sperm is good for scars. I enjoy if it turns out to be an urban myth, you will forget about your scars for a few minutes

@rogg,
Part of the process of scarring is that the scar will contract.
I think it often peaks at about three months.
You can stretch scar tissue and that is all the massage will do.
I would suggest something like bio oil, I don't think it is that important.
Massage the scar daily once or twice trying to get it to stretch.
Repeated massage will also eventually soften it making it easier.
If it remains too tight when it has fully matured that bit of the scar can be revised by the surgeon to remove the tight band that has developed .

Thanks@Jonathan Bell, Bio oil and twice daily massage it is at the moment. Five and a bit weeks into my recovery, and whilst it pulled up a fair bit to start (weeks 2-4 it seemed) it think it's slowing. Maybe the effect of massage/oiling? At the moment i"m doing small circular motions with a reasonable amount of pressure for 3-4 minutes over the scar then a sort of long stroke down the length of the scar. Does this sound about right?
