Hello - I've been experiencing some dull aching with the occasional incidence of sharp pain in the right groin area for a few weeks now ...
I've just had an ultrasound scan - the radiologist confirmed the presence of hernia but was unable to elaborate further until a formal report was written and then sent to my GP for review.
I'm not asking for a medical opinion here but has anyone skied / boarded in the past with a hernia? We're off to La Tania in 3 weeks so obviously I won't have had any surgery etc before then. Of course, I'm planning to consult with my GP and specialist before I attempt anything ...
Thanks

Hi franga, my partner had a double hernia repair (open mesh repair done in two separate ops about a month apart) in 2015; our holiday ended up being a month or so before the first op was scheduled. He had a week's boarding without too many issues at all - he did decide to take a day off in the middle of the holiday to rest (the more painful of the two was a bit achy after three fairly full-on days, so he didn't want to push it - although the pain was no worse than the intermittent pain he had been getting anyway from it), but then he was fine again for the last couple of days. It didn't seem to make things any worse after the holiday either. As you say, it'll be worth checking with your GP and specialist, but his experience was really not too bad and certainly much better than he worried it might be. Not sure if you're a boarder or a skier, but I also think boarding (as he was) would probably be less kind to it than skiing.
Also, in case it's of interest, he was back to running within a couple of months, was boarding again as normal by the time our holiday came around the following year and is now doing more running than he's ever done! Hope all goes well for you.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks so much for this @Gipfel - much appreciated.
I am a boarder too ... I agree, the boarding stance is likely to put more pressure on that specific region ... I suppose, and subject to the experts OKing this, I may have to hold back a bit and take regular breaks etc ..
TBH it doesn't really bother me at the moment, I cycle at the moment and was at the Chill Factore in Manchester with my 12Y old for a few hours last week.
Thanks again.

@franga, you'll need to tell your insurance now that you have a diagnosis. it may or may not be covered

The elements of your question:
1
Have you skied with an inguinal hernia - yes, for twenty years when it was a vague ache and small bulge, but when it suddenly stuck out a lot in summer 2017 and was quite painful, it was clear that heavy lifting was dangerous and I needed to really keep an eye on it. I was cleared for a flight to Shanghai, but stopped felling 30m trees.
2
I got it sorted by the excellent Andrew Hindmarsh, in October 2018 (keyhole mesh repair) and was clear for skiing by December ‘18.
3
As for insurance, in season 17-18 I told them I was being investigated for hernia, and they said fine has your doctor cleared you for skiing, but if anything happens whilst you are away even if you are cleared for skiing, and it’s related to the hernia, then we won’t cover it. And if you hadn’t told us then all your insurance would have been null and void.

@franga, I tolerated an inguinal hernia for 4 years whilst still n the UK, skiing several times a year, I was self-employed and just couldn't afford the time off, eventually got it done just before Xmas so had time to recover, it was open surgery and took around 4-5 weeks before I could ski as I recall.
Had a second one done (other side!) a year ago, again got it done just before Xmas so I wouldn't have to ski with the Christmas hordes!!
Here in France, keyhole is de rigour and my surgeon told me 3 weeks and I'll be fine for skiing, despite me saying I mostly tour and freeride, went up 2 weeks and 6 days later, it was fine

@franga, I’ve got one and surgeon has said it’s not worth operating on. I asked him if I could ski, cycle, hike etc and he said yes to all those activities. (And he also said that if it starts to hurt and/or sticks out then go to the Dr immediately!)

The problem is that hernias are a bit binary.
0 bit of a bulge, stable = no problem
1 significant bulge, extreme pain, strangulated = death
And they can go from 0 to 1 suddenly. Irritating.

@valais2, you forgot 0.5, "it's bulged out again, best go and lay down and manipulate it back in"......
Guilty as charged

Skied with an inguinal hernia about 4 years ago. No significant pain, just discomfort - wore a pair of tight lycra style shorts with bands stitched in covering the hernia site. Probably more a confidence builder than any actual medical benefit. Found I spent a lot of time "popping it back in" with my finger as the day wore on...hopefully nobody misconstrued the action!
Had a keyhole mesh repair and it's been fine since - I do try to be extra careful when I'm lifting the heavy weights now though.

@KenX, ....that’s true. Mine bulged just prior to Shanghai, very painful, and the nice doctor in A&E looked at it, smiled and suddenly PRESSED REALLY HARD....’all done’ she said...well I wasn’t expecting that....
Worked though.

There's real application of rule 5 for you and dedication, time to ski but not to have the op.
I guess skiiing with one depends on what brings the pain on, I'm not sure that skiing with it will make it worse but a medical opinion would be needed. I never skied when I had mine come on but the last one hurt when I tried to sprint or push off in a certain direction but jogging was fine.

This is a very timely topic! I have a hernia just above my stomach (forget the medical name). I have had it for a couple of years now, and only in the last 6 months has it given me any pain. Usually a dull ache with the occasional sharp ache, over a period of an hour or two. The bulge isn't that pronounced. I'd say 5-10mm from my normal skin surface. I asked a doctor about it when it first showed, but he told me not to worry unless it started to get very sore. I do a lot of cycling (mostly mountain biking) and a bit of running and it usually doesn't cause me many issues when I'm exercising. Good luck!

Thank you, booked in to see a specialist / general surgeon in early March after my HT trip to the 3Vs. I’ve ordered a pair of compression pants just in case but I do a lot of road cycling and other than some mild discomfort it’s not given me any real issues.
