New here, just trying to find the best solution to protect carpet from waxing, I normally put ripped up cardboard boxes down out side and the wife still moans, I see someone said they use newspaper. Has any body found a good solution so I can at lest do it indoors as I have got mine and the kids gear to do? thanks

Not specifically, and I make sure to do mine in the garden. But I can recommend a hand-held vacuum cleaner to pick up a lot of the mess as you go.

Do it in the kitchen? lino, tiled, laminate floor easy to clean.
If not buy one of those big polythene sheets used for decorating, spread it on the floor then when done just roll it all up and put it in the bin......apart from the smell of the wax and a ruined iron her indoors will be non the wiser.

I’ll second the big plastic sheets intended for decorating. They big enough to cover a huge area, as wax will get everywhere, and cheap enough to throw away once used a few times.

In kitchen the tiled floor just cleans up nicely, or I fetch large cardboard bike box in from garage. If I can't find a little room to service in when away this year it will be a collection of pizza boxes.

I'm still using same thing as I used when I was traveling around World cup... no idea what's English word for this, but it's that "plastic" thimng that trucks have to cover their trailers. I have few sources to get old ones that truckers throw away when they get cut and need to be replaced, but I have no idea where you could buy it. It's big, it's waterproof so when hot wax drops down, it doesn't stick to floor, and it's easy to clean. I'm not doing skis in kitchen, but it's still nice to keep floor of your workshop clean and without wax sticking to floor.

The garage. Sheets will catch wax drippings/scrapping, but when brushing it end up everywhere.

Yeah, that’s going to ruin your carpet. I use a big piece of cardboard that came off furniture packaging, but a sheet would do. Don’t do it directly onto a hard floor either, unless you want to turn it into a skating rink.

If it was me, and I was planning to do this again, and didn't want to be executed for destroying a carpet, I'd invest in a sheet of rubber matting from ebay. Easy to clean with a hoover, also easy to roll up and take the entire mess outside for cleaning, and you avoid the almost inevitable moment when all is done making a mess and you turn around, kick the sheet of cardboard, and the mess goes bloody everywhere.

PS 4m x 4m should be enough so you don't get murdered. If you can get wax more than 2m from the skis you are waxing in the centre of the mat you are doing well.

Its really cheap & you can tape sheets together with a decent cloth tape.
Its also thin enough to fold up into a storage size... or you can even roll it.

I use a shower curtain. You can get a cheap one from supermarket or Argos. Thick enough to protect floor and waste comes off easily when you shake it out outside.

I have the advantage of having a spare room that I can effectively use as a workshop, so I just have a sheet of 'single ply membrane' that I acquired from a site I was working on (it was surplus to requirements) that's easy enough to sweep clean. I find that having an old vacuum that I can use is pretty useful too, don't make the mistake of using the decent one that's used in the rest of the house!

its not that easy to get off wood floor! so i just buffed it in.

An old curtain works for me, used a tablecloth before that. A dedicated brush is handy too

Watching dogs scrabble on a hard floor is funny but watching them after a ski service is hilarious  .
I now use a piece of old carpet (any cheep bit will do) and chuck it down under where i'm doing the ski's, roll it up, shake it outside when finished.

There are no hard and fast dimensions, I made mine in a morning from a sheet of 12mm ply, one big advantage is being able to tune in your lounge in the warm without making a mess, ignore the wax shavings on the floor in my pic that was before using the box
Once I have the piano hinge installed it will fold in half for storage
You can easily adjust it for snow board use by making an extra pair of deeper cuts to hold the board on its side for edge tuning.

In any case that you really can't avoid the carpet, have it cleaned by a carpet cleaner. I am using a dedicated carpet cleaner in cleaning carpets which I've seen guides at Vacuum Top. I hope this helps.

I have some kind of plastic covered fabric picnic tablecloth type thing that i was given years back. surfboard repairs waxing and other messy diy jobs over the years have rendered it stiff as a board.
