Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just back from a business trip to Norway where I squeezed in a cheeky evening telemarking at Oslo Vinterpark. But much more interesting is the premier of a ski film there today. It retells the medevial epic journey on skis to rescue a young king - The Birkbeinerne. They've got some of Norways top free riders on tells in reindeer skins and it looks like Game of Thrones on skis. The production company behind the skiing scenes is the rather good Field Productions. Famous for the Supervention films. Anyhow, they have released a making-of 8 minute video that is pretty good too. Even shows how they made medieval powered planks with steel edges and telemark bindings. I think there may be an English release as The Last King.
Enjoy the turns

Not sure if you're aware but there's an x-c race called after this where competitors have to carry a load to simulate the carrying of the young king

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, that's the big cultural tradition. I think this film will help reboot the franchise with younger folk

It looks like they had a lot of fun making it. The skis look like fun too.
Your link had a problem, let's see if this works.

Strange. I can't see why this isn't working.
A google search for supervention-2-behind-the-scenes-birkebeinerne-the-last-king brings up a link to the video. Or just copy and paste the link into a new browser tab.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have skied on some of the routes that are included in the Birkebeinerrennet and it is a fantastic area for XC enthusiasts. Miles and miles of perfect skiløyper in the hills to the East of Lillehammer.
If you zoom out from the linked map you can see the whole route.
