 Poster: A snowHead

As mentioned elsewhere, forums can get a bit repetitive, and therefore dull. One of the subjects that always grabs my attention is trip reports from somewhere off the beaten track. So....
Has anyone any experience of (either good or else interesting) skiing outside France, Austria, Italy, Scotland, Canada, U.S and Japan that hasn't already been documented on Snowheads? The more basic the infrastructure the better, and preferably somewhere that sounds like I'd enjoy heading there (Georgia has now joined Japan on my to do list).

Well, let me the first to mention Scotland. And Mike Pow has posted some wonderful photos of skiing in the Brecon Beacons.

That sounds like it was a lot of fun! Is there much to the resort for those of us who don't have a helicopter?!

Try NZ - hire a camper van and tour around the smaller stations. Ohau was a particular favourite. Closer to home have a look at the less well known Spanish stations, stunning scenery and laid back atmosphere (Panticosa, Cerler, Candanchu).

Yep! I only had one day heliskiing (actually the last day of their season!), then skied 5 days in the resort. There's a hell of a lot just from the lifts (including down to the next villages down the valley from Gulmarg - you can get a jeep to shuttle you back), and the 30-40 minute hike to the peak roughly doubles the amount of terrain available. Pack touring bindings and skins and you'd have a metric poo-poo ton to play with...

- Great fun in the Swedish Arctic Circle - at Bjorkliden (small but scenic and good fun) and Riksgransen (ditto but with more challenging terrain and some entertaining off piste). Night in the Ice Hotel too (fantastic).
- Great long weekend around Ljubljana, Slovenia. Krvavec is only 20 min from the airport and is good for a day or two.Fairly high skiing, accessed by gondola. Vogel is accessed by a queue-prone cable car but is pretty decent once you get up there. Nice varied terrain.Great scenery and highest point reached by an ancient single seat chair. Cerkno is small but has some good cruising and a couple of fast chairs. Prices were very cheap.
- Had fun at 3 tiny areas around Zakopane in Poland.These were Syzmoskowa, Nosal and Harenda. Great snow and more of a cultural experience than great ski areas - Zakopane has some nice rustic restaurants. Still enjoyed it though. There is a bigger area at Zakopane - but we couldn't get a cable car ticket to get up there (sold out!)
- We concluded a trip to all the areas of Andorra with a day at Massana/La Masella in Spain. Pretty decent ski area and very novel destination.
- Chile is amazing - just great to do winter in our summer. 3 Valleys area nr Santiago is very mainstream but well worth a visit. Fairly extensive and we had fantastic snow.Termas De Chillan, which is a lot further south, is like something off a Warren Miller film - rickety wooden chairlift (plus other lifts) and hikes to tops of smoking volcanoes for great off piste.

For Poland its worth checking out Bialka Tatzranska, its small (but larger than anywhere in Zakopane), but everything in one place and its only 10 mins down the road from Zakopane anyway.

We tend to go there a couple of times a year, great for kids and beginners, probably a bit lacking for those that are advanced!

Straya - Mount Hotham and Falls Creek
You can ski Mount Hotham in a day. It has about 10-15 lifts in total and max vertical of around 450m. Unfortunately the season I was there (2001), was one of the worst in a long time.

I did Australia - or to be more accurate - New South Wales in the early 1990s. Perisher and Mount Blue Cow (separate ski areas in those days, now combined with Guthega) and Thredbo. August conditions were great despite one day of pouring rain and definitely worth going if you're in Oz for other reasons, visiting relatives etc.
