Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I noticed the other day that, apart from some give in the plastic around the front of the cuff, my boots (technica) don't actually appear to have any flex. That is, the cuff cannot incline forward. I then realised that I didn't know that much at all about boot flex.
On the link above (scroll down the page) there is an animation showing boot/cuff flex -- and it clearly shows
movement
- which is what I thought should occur.
Is this something particular to my boots ? they are getting on a bit now (8 years or so), and while very comfortable, were not expensive or high end. I think they are called Technica Alo or something like that.

could it be that you do not have much in the way of ankle dorsiflexion or that you don't apply much stress to your boots in that direction?
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Not that. I tested it and noticed that all the flex seems to come solely from 'give' in the plastic cuff under the buckles - so even when I keep my legs straight and lean right forwards (or as much as possible) there is no forward
movement
in the cuff itself. Maybe I need to invest in a decent pair of boots ?

Don't lean forwards. Bend your knees and ankles. You can create much more pressure on the front of the boot this way.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I don't actually ski like that ... I meant as a test of the boot/cuff flex. I can get ankle flex but this comes from give in the cuff plastic rather than
movement
of the whole cuff section.
