I am looking at a few 'milky way' based holidays and not sure where to stay.
Claviere has the best hotel out the 4 i have looked at but just a bit worried about getting to Sansicario / Sestriere side of the mountain....how long and easy is it to get there?
Also can anyone have link to Italian website to price lift passes as few i have seen have 6 days in Claviere with day in france and a day on left side of mountain but really want more than one day in Sansicario etc

It's a bit drawn out, but fairly easy. Sansicario is a bit spooky, the '92 Olympic complex is there and pretty much abandoned.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I stayed in Claviere a few years ago and to be honest it's a bit of a trek to get over to Sestriere and unless you're desperate I'd drive or get a bus (if there is one). You'll take so long getting over there on not very interesting piste (the first half is generally narrow tracks through forest) that you're time over there will be compromised.
Maybe you could ski one way and get the bus back or vice versa.
There does appear to be a bus to Cesana that might be of use as it takes out a lot of the drudgery but you'd be advised to check the winter timetable

I actually disagree. If there's sufficient snow, the run from Sauze to Claviere is actually good fun, my pals and I used to pelt it.
Coming back is a bit of a drag, but nothing too tiresome.

It's doable and not too much trouble as long as you get an early start. Sauze, Clavier, Montgenevre loop and back was a days skiing...just. Unless the snow/skill allow you to ski the black under the lift I'd download on the chair to the valley to reach SanSicario rather than taking the endless, flatish forest track.

I must have an lower boredom threshold than you I'm afraid. Croce (the black) down from Claviere was closed and the alternative blue (90 Basso) which zig-zags through the trees was sleep inducing as the gradient is far too shallow to be able to maintain a decent speed, and we straightlined it from top to bottom (with the occasional stand up to ease the lactic). Even once you've got down to Cesana you've then got another 5 (!) lifts to get up to the top of the ridge above Sansicario and finally some proper skiing. In my view all lifts eat into my skiing time enough as it is ! What with the 3 lifts required on the Clav side to get up and over it was too much lift time and not enough slope time. 8 lifts and one run is a poor return in my book

I remember that endless zig zag track many years ago. More recently I stayed in Clavier and skied Milkyway most days. Snow wasn't so good so skiing down from top to bottom wasn't an option. If the weather closes the linking lifts can close but a bus runs between the two. I love the area some great skiing, but many slow lifts do take just too much time. From memory Montgenvre a bit limited on piste however a good range of off piste.
Perhaps consider staying in Sauze d'oulx and trip out to Clavier if you want a change of scenery.

Ah, there's a bus every 10 minutes during the day and I've always found it a real sociable village on my evening walks to McGintys!
