Poster: A snowHead

Just wondering has anyone had one of these. This year we have rented cars abroad on 3 occasions. I have noticed that the buyout is now €13 a night and thought I had seen someone mention an annual policy.

We use icarhireinsurance. It seems to give good coverage and I have used it for a number of years, but never had occasion to test it. It was recommended to me by a couple of other people, and there is online chatter that they seem to do what it says on the tin, but no personal claims experience (thankfully!).

I've had this in the past for trips. Only problem I encountered was at the desk 1. If you don't take the hire companies excess policy they block the excess on your card. If you have a tip they take the excess then you go to your Excess company and try to get the money back. It works okay so long as you don't need your credit card to fund all/part of your trip.

We always rent cars through carhire3000, I think they are rentalcars now. They always but a hold of the excess on the card anyway because we are not renting direct from car hire company. This summer in Bergamo it was €1300, wasn't impressed.

I've been using Questor for several years. Fortunately never had to claim on it, but I get a loyalty discount each year when I renew. There's a certain level of customisation available - you can add cover for the country you reside in, not just countries you are travelling to, which I needed.
Various discounts listed via MoneySavingExpert. (and various other tips)

I've had it for about 4 years but never had cause to claim. It is a massive benefit for me as I hire practically every week at Stansted. If I was to take the 'maxi' cover offered by Hertz or Europcar it would double my weekly hire costs. I won't be renewing my cover when it expires next week as I have the same cover included with my Platinum Amex.
I keep reading on here about rental companies "scams" and "rip-offs". I don't see it that way but at the same time I can see why some people don't like the business model. Take this week as an example. I had a "Group C" car for 3 days from Hertz at Stansted. It cost £55. The car was a 65 plate midrange Kia Ceed Diesel. You have to wonder how they make any money out of that base price. That price is not unusual. I've had as low as £45 and as high as £98 for 3 days. Even at the highest level there can't be much margin in it. Most weeks I get an upgrade as I have "Privilege VIP" status with Europcar that gets me a 2 level upgrade and Five Star with Hertz that gives me a one level upgrade. I frequently end up in a Qashqai, Kuga, Mocha or Insignia.
I do not take any of the additional insurances because I don't need them. If the rental companies are forced to reduce their excesses and/or include higher levels of cover then the base price will have to increase. That will increase my costs substantially as the car hire costs come out of my pocket. It will also hit the many "savvy" renters who buy excess insurance from third parties.
No system is perfect but if you do your homework before you rent you can cut the costs.
