Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chaps, i'm off to La Plagne in Jan, any restaurants you can recommend for a good lunch?

i usually ski in Austria where mountain stops seem to be a much higher quality than en France!

i'm looking for a pucker restaurant rather than a self service cafeteria!

"Pucker" = "tightly gather or contract into wrinkles or small folds." Not too sure about a dining experience that makes one "pucker". On the other hand:

Pukka (Hindi पक्का, Urdu پكّا pakkā) is a word of Hindi and Urdu origin, literally meaning "cooked, ripe" and figuratively "fully formed", "solid", "permanent", "for real" or "sure". In UK slang, it can mean "genuine" or simply "very good". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pukka

@gazzaredcruiser, I'm told that's because many mountain eateries in France are owned by the lift company, so no competition, whereas those in Austria are privately run and must compete with one another.

When I went to la Plagne a good few years ago there where quite a few what I call canteens (self service) including one that the food was so poor I even dared to complain and was met with the typical Galic shoulder shrug and a look of "I couldn't give a fig!"
Like you I am more of an Austrian skier and therefore more use to their take on mountain food.
However, I do remember that there was a least one on piste restaurant in la Plagne that stuck in my memory as being really excellent- great food, drink, service, views and great prices to match. It was a few years ago and I can't remember its name, but it was low down and on the front side of the mountain. I will look at the piste map later to see if I can find it.

@gazzaredcruiser, if you edit your header to indicate you want to eat in La Plagne you'll be more likely to get detailed replies. As it is, could be anywhere!

I can't think of a single French resort with restaurants owned by the lift company other than Les Arcs 1950.We must be spoilt in the PdS - I haven't had any 'canteen' meals and the food is always of a high standard.

Food in Austria is more meat heavy- it's much less so in France.

It's far too long ago that I was in La Plagne to be of any use with recommendations but there are plenty of frequent visitors who will be able to point you in the right direction.

@gazzaredcruiser, I assume you mean the whole La Plagne area - try the following:

Le Forperet - just above Montalbert. A quaint little chalet type place just off the piste.http://www.la-plagne.com/images/cache/3d6b911893c6b57996cc8f9c8ce26475_w300.jpg

Otherwise: http://www.laplagnet.com/restaurants/mountain/

Quality is variable, some great and some OK, but from memory there are relatively few self-service places. If there were, we certainly wouldn't have gone to them. Very Happy

I think mountain food is generally better in Austria/Italy, but in my very limited experience there do seem to be fewer charming little mountain restaurants than in France.

@Gordyjh, 'I'm told...' I wonder who told you that?

Certainly, at Val Thorens anyway, the mountain restaurants are leased/owned completely separately from the lift company operation. The costs are very high.

There are many good, but pricey, restaurants in the mountains in French resorts.

The restaurant at the bottom of the lift in Monetier is owned by the village, and the contract is tendered out every few years. Last season changed hands, self downstairs (reasonable choice, usually very good plat du jour) and new restaurant upstairs. We didn't get to try it, but will be doing so this season.

Le Forperet http://forperet.com/restaurant/?lang=en has had a huge extension built this summer - lets hope it doesn't spoil the farmhouse style charm...
BTB the same family also own Le Tournamente restaurant bar in Montalbert Old Village, Bar with sports TV and Pool table downstairs with excellent restaurant upstairs.

I don't know any restaurants owned by the lift company in my area, but I believe there might be some in Chamonix. But it's the north Americans who seem to specialise in that - one company owns everything.

The "plat du jour" is generally the best bet in French mountain restaurants. I could direct you to half a dozen good (and not expensive) ones in my area plus a couple of very good but expensive ones.

So this thread is a bit of a microcosm of the internet.

- person asks a reasonable question
- lots of biased advice supporting everyone's own existing views
- someone makes something up/repeats some complete tosh
- a voice of reason posts something useful with a source giving the answer
- round we go in circles again

Happy days on the internet Very Happy Very Happy

Most restaurants in the "main" Chamonix valley (i.e. beyond Les Houches) are operated by the lift company and are, thusly, a bit rubbish and a bit pricey. There are exceptions.

Fun to click through that selection - including those in La Plagne, for the OP to sample. Even in January might be wise to book?

They are not, of course, the best 40 restaurants, they are 40 very good restaurants!

That new one at Piz Boe has a pretty nice view....

Makes me look forward to sitting somewhere cosy and snowy with a good lunch - one of the pleasures of skiing with friends who are all paying for their own, unlike the days of skiing with small kids when lunch on the slopes just didn't happen.

@pam w, it's a slightly dodgy list, the pix don't all correspond to the places and it's a little biased towards popular UK destinations. But ... not a bad list to start with.

I don't know why I am surprised that I recognise so many of these as my waist line testifies. Just looking makes me salivate. I look forward to the PreBBWUW4 and S12BB for some good lunches & good company. I hope we can put together a like minded group that does not dawdle on piste to allow time for a leisurely lunches. I hope to make 2 pilgrimages to Refugio Scotoni, I need someone to share the mixed grill with.

@shep, and the restaurant at the lake in Les Gets is also owned by the lift company or commune. We have had some good meals there and it's a good stopping off place for us as on our way back to our chalet when we go past.

Maybe what this shows is that many of the perfectly decent restaurants may be owned by the lift companies but it doesn't necessarily the track from the overall quality.

Not exactly most but fair enough @shep, owning and operating is slightly different though- we're very far off the Intrawest model.

i've had slow service on occasion but not bad food. I wouldn't order the same food in a mountain restaurant as I would down in town, and expect the same outcome. Choose wisely.

I think we are very lucky in the PDS that there are so many different places to eat at all budgets. We have the odd one called 'they didn't have the vegetable soup' and 'we sat there for 20 minutes with no service' oh and 'your steak appeared but what about my goats cheese salad' - and we simply haven't been back to those. Plenty of others to enjoy.

I don't believe that's true for Arc 1950. It wasn't the lift company that developed that resort, it was initially Intrawest but they sold up several years ago. The commercial property I'd guess is still owned by the company that took over from Intrawest, and this will be leased to the operators of the different restaurants and cafes. I'd think that the variety of places are operated by separate entities, so there is competition (at least as much as is enabled by the lease), but that must be the same for a number of businesses across the Alps (where the operator leases the property rather than owns it)?

It depends on what you class as "on piste". The Hotel Carlina is on the piste between Belle Plagne and Plagne Bellcote. You can eat on the deck outside or inside in a couple of very nice dining areas.
