Hello, 9 of us are going to Chatel in January and the cheapest way to get to resort is a private transfer from Geneva. But we want to stop and do a big supermarket shop on the way to keep costs down. Does anyone know of a company that would do this? First time at Chatel but 9 years of boarding I know how expensive resort shops are especially with 9 thirsty boarders!!!!!...any advice welcome thanks

@Herbsalad, welcome to Snowheads!
Yes sure on a private transfer most of them would do this for you if you tell them you want to so they can build time in. You could just ask the driver on the day and he probably would unless he was on a tight turnaround. So I'd ask in advance. Try either Magic Transfers or Professional Transfers and tell 'em I sent you.

Drivers HATE it when guests ask them to stop. @under a new name, suggestion is the best I reckon.
Chatel has a big Intermarche doesnt it? so not "as" expensive as some resorts which just have the tiny corner shop style Spar or Sherpa.

If Chatel has a big supermarket then we're happy with that....checked out online shopping...cannot get a straight answer from the supermarkets about that unless anyone on here knows if it's possible?? (Except Sherpa but there expensive aren't they)

@Herbsalad, I think you`ll be fine at Intermarche

Chatel's Intermarche is on the edge of town but reachable via the E navette free bus. It doesn't do online shopping.
It's supermarket sized, i.e. not hypermarket nor the small places you find in ski resorts and so has a reasonable selection. Prices are not noticeably different from down the valley.
If you really want a big hypermarket, the Carrefour in Anthy is en route between GVA and Chatel.

I think as a standard most transfer companies will say "no" as "we'll only be quick" often becomes an hour or more all of which eats in to the day which for somewhere like Chatel is half way back to GVA and their next money earner!
I know the company I drove for used to hate them but as a driver we sometimes didn't mind if we had time and we adequately rewarded and I don't mean with just a tip of your shrapnel.... if asked and I had time I would give the price and take payment before I stopped as once I didn't take payment and then the tourists refused to pay "as it was on your way and only an hour"
The other option is to book your transfer for an hour later than you need and go to the Migro at GVA before you meet your transfer!

I certainly wouldn't expect a transfer driver to sit around outside a supermarket without having agreed in advance AND charged extra pro rata. As an unpaid transfer driver I have been known to get ratty if someone neither under 6 nor pregnant needs to stop for a pee.

I don't mind paying an extra fee for the inconvenience of stopping and waiting....didn't expect any favours and it can't be that unusual to ask. Shame we can't order online like here would save loads of messing about. I'm sure we're not gonna starve thanks for all your advice now praying for the snow to start 🌨🌨🌨

1. Do they need the bus back to complete another transfer?
2. Most transfer drivers are paid by the hour so most companies won't allow it.
But if its owner driven and he/she is not busy then €25 should do it.

You know it makes sense.

@Herbsalad, why can't you order online?

Lots of French supermarkets do a click and collect type thing - so all you'll need to do is a quick stop (rather than the driver wait whilst you wander around the aisles)

Just to say I wasn't suggesting the transfer driver would just do it for nothing, but to ask for it to be arranged in advance if it fitted in with their other bookings and so unlikely on a busy transfer day. Obviously it's not that easy, so I stand corrected.
Online shopping... Sherpa will deliver. No other online options AFAIK. Super U in Vinzier don't. As mentioned there is an Intermarche supermarket, not that big and pretty uninspiring but definitely suffices for a week's holiday. You can get there on the bus.
Intermarche is actually classed as being in La Chapelle d'Abondance just in case you're looking it up online and they don't deliver or do the click and collect thing.

@pleary, a lot of the click and collect places will only do it if you have a French bank account registered to a French address. I have the French bank card, but not the French address.

If flying to Geneva, why would 9 "thirsty skiers" not take the opportunities available at Duty Free of an outbound airport?
Other items are not that different in terms of price in a valey in comparison to a resort mini markets (bread and butter, pasta, etc).

@Herbsalad, there is Taxi Rubin but I don't think they do local short journeys, more transfers. They don't really seem to have taxis there as we do here. Where is your accommodation?

@Herbsalad, depending where your chalet is, you could get the free bus E which runs past the supermarket to Linga, then back to town, where you can change bus to most of the rest of the village.

@Herbsalad, I really don't think I will be there that week or I would have done. I think I will be back out sometime during the week after, no definite plans yet. Route du Petit Chatel is definitely on the bus route though.
