Friends are going here mid January, thinking of joining them, but never having skied in this area before, but looks a good base for the Sella Ronda, any thoughts from people who have stayed and skied there? Thanks.

If it's the Sella Ronda you're interested in, it's not the best. You would be better off in a resort directly on the circuit. That would make many more places accessible.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@NeddySkiGoon,
Ortisei onto the SR is in my opinion, is some of the most spectacular skiing in Europe. Seceda- Sasslong (lift)- Ciampinoi. Stunning.
Ortsei is a classy place to stay for mature adults. There is plenty of terrific skiing to be had & explored; on the Seiser Alm/Compastch side or down to Santa Christina via the Suceeda. You can do bothe sides of this offshoot of the Sella ronda with the amazing Monte Pana to Saltria ski bus link to make a very full day skiing excursion.
It does take a fair while to actually link to the Sella Ronda circuit & so not the best suited if you want to explore beyond Selva.... but you need to make several weeks do the Sella Ronda full justice so I would jump at a chance to experience this part of the Dolimiti ski area.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks very much for the info, it certainly seems a good place to explore for our first venture out of France for many years!
in my limited experience the lifts on the SR circuit can be pretty crowded, even in supposedly "quiet" times. some of the skiing off the main circuit is probably preferable! It's a wonderful area.

@Kiters, I'd echo what some of the earlier posters have said about there being some lovely skiing in the Val Gardena valley. Also it's perfectly possible to do the Sella Ronda if you are based in Ortisei - there's a frequent skibus service from Ortisei to Selva, so the thing to do is start early and take the bus from Ortisei to Selva (quicker than skiing there) then at Selva you are on the Sella Ronda. Just make sure that you do the circuit and are back in Selva by the time the last lifts close. You'll then have time for some celebratory apres ski drinks in the Luiskeller in Selva ( if that's your thing ) as the skibus back to Ortisei runs well into the evening.
