Poster: A snowHead

Hi all I'm new on here, and have just bought myself an arcteryx sidewinder shell jacket. does anyone use them ? are they any good? I've lusted after arcteryx stuff for quite some time and decided to take the plunge this year before i head off to nutria in a few weeks time. Im a keen hunter too and have lots of other brands. id been a big fan of north face gear until i started to notice it seems to be getting worse and worse quality wise.
appreciate any comments!

Welcome to Snowheads!! It should do the job of keeping the weather out, you just need to work out your layering strategy under it for various temperatures.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've not got one but i know plenty of people that do and they love them. Quality and aftersales from them is great. As Dave says you'll need to sort layering

acm, not daft at all. Got one. Wonderful jacket. With 2 or 3 merino layers it will cope with any weather. Waterproof but breaths, so can sit on it when partaking of luncheon.

I've had one for 10 years I think. Actually wear something else most of the time these days but it is still a fantastic jacket - cut is brilliant and love that curved offset zip and excellent hood - really seems to move with your head so you can still see when you shoulder check. Reassuringly expensive

acm, layering combination entirely personal = what works for me won't work for you.
Trial and error. A Backpack helps

As you asked, here are some of my thoughts on base layers: http://www.luex.com/magazine/2014/11/18/base-layer-101
Plenty of other good options out there too, but those are the best I've tried.

Basically you need a base layer, a mid-layer and an insulation layer to go under your shell. The thickness of layers will depend on weather. A light down vest serves well as an insulation layer. It might not be needed at all, but it can be kept in a backpack for when you need it. Or you can put it on in the morning and then put it in a backpack if gets too warm. Allow for some space between layers too.
