My friends are planning a stag weekend for me in March. One of the ideas that came up is a ski weekend. I'm looking for a resort that will fit the following criteria: easily accessible for weekend skiers, best partying and suitable for intermediate skiers
I know verbier is a fantastic place for this kind of weekend but i've been to verbier last year and i'm returning in 2 weeks so i'm looking for something else. Resorts that come to mind are val d'isere and courch, which is fine but if there are other resorts on the cheaper side that would be fantastic
Many thanks!!

i would put chamonix in the same category as val and courch no? How about les deux alpes? is it significantly cheaper?

Not Courchevel unless you are fully loaded and speak Russian. Meribel might be better - you can't ask for a serieux without getting strange looks and the response "Wot? You mean a pint don't you?"
Val d'Isere has a nice high street for carousing and crawling down (and a kebab shop).
St Anton is meant to have a good reputation for this sort of thing, but would suit the more experienced intermediates.
Chamonix is definitely possible, but you have to plan your route well in advance. It would certainly be an excellent choice for a weekend trip. Plenty of cheap central hotels that would put you up for two or three nights.
I think I'd make it Chamonix.

I'd say Cham is cheaper than Val and Courchevel - it's a real town and has to cater for a wider range of budgets.
Big benefit for a weekend is that you can do the transfer in about an hour from GVA. Val and Courchevel are a bit of a schlep for a weekend.
Another place that could be fun is Kitzbuhel. About 90mins from Munich airport or a bit less (?) from Salzburg.

Another thought - Engelberg. Could get the train in two hours from Zurich. Would allow everyone to start drinking without drivers needing to stay sober

Innsbruck. Get package via Expedia. Quick taxi from the airport to city centre. Business hotels have plenty of room at week-ends. Proper city nightlife. tons of skiing just a bus ride away or take the new lift out of town. There's an interesting club by the Holiday Inn

Not exactly a hive of activity though for nightlife??? I'd go with Chamonix...

Incidentally, if you're into partying during the day as well as the evening then Val d'Isere has the Folie Douce.
There's some really nice cruisy blue runs above the Olympic cable car for intermediates to get their teeth into. Do those on Saturday morning, and then head to Folie Douce for a long lunch. Simply point the board/skis down to La Daille at the end of the afternoon and then get ready for the evening. Incidentally, La Daille is the cheap end of town - if you want to save your dosh on accom. for the 6 quid pints (you'll be sick squids too!).
Just bung Folie Douce into YouTube to get an idea of what a funked up place it is:

For my mate' stag do last year we had a weekend at Snowbombing in Mayrhofen; its a music festival in a cool ski resort, so plenty of stuff other than just skiing. Its on from 28th March this year, Fatboy Slim headlining plus a whole load of other DJs and bands.

kitenski, Engelberg IS lively IMO. Plenty of bars with late drinking, good apres ski as well. Superb off piste and an attractive town.

Sauze d' Oulx ? Extensive skiing, great nightlife and only and hour and a half from Turin.
Personally I find Cham great for skiing and apres but bug all else.

Ischgl, really easy to get to, skiing would suit all and great party town also not many Brits so it's more likely what will happen on tour will stay on tour!

and more lap dancing clubs than you can shake a stick at. No casinos though. The locals reckon they lower the tone of the place.

snowforever, You'd be hard puched to better St Anton - great and I mean great apres ski, Great skiing too. No lapdancing though, so if that's your thang head to Ischgl. Sorry folks but France can't touch these resorts for apres. Innsbruck is best airport for both and just about an hour away from each place - can fly easyJet. Or you can go Friedrichshafen with Ryanair - not quite as convenient though, especially for Ischgl

I guess it's chamonix then (consensus!). I found central hotels for 80 euros a room (so 40 pp) for the night. Only downside is that I failed to mention we were 3 internediates (red slope kind of intermediates) and a complete beginner. But hey if we're partying all night I gues he could use his afternoon skiing in the few nursery slopes!)

Brevent (the only lift walkable from the town centre - if you exclude VB) is a pretty good area for beginner intermediates. There's also a nursery slope in town - given snow.
The bars can be a bit spread out across town, so figure out where they are in advance rather than wander around aimlessly. Of course, there are quite a few bars you can't miss in the town centre, but if you want to get a bit of fresh air on a long crawl then there are plenty more.

If you're interested in the catered chalet lark then do check out http://www.bigfoot-travel.co.uk . Their Chalet Whymper (sleeps 20-25) is extremely central to Chamonix, and fairly close to the Brevent lift. For example, 3 nights half board is available for 4 persons on 7th March at £345pp. Not exactly cheap though.

Trenmold, A fair point well made but considering that snowforever, is arranging a stag do I assume that they will want to party long after 7pm and not do the ski, apres, meal and bed sketch that most of us do.
However, snowforever, if you are going to Chamomix do check out Chambre Neuf for Apres as IMV it's one of the best apres bars going

halfhand, are you telling me that 'apres' means the period after skiing, but BEFORE dinner?
I thought it meant the period after skiing and before sleep.

The only French resort I would consider for a stag weekend would be L2A. Best nightlife I have seen in a French resort.
But to be honest I would go to somewhere in Austria. Although it can be a challenge getting weekend accomodation.
Solden would be a good choice. As would Saalbach or Ischgl.

Garmisch Partenkirchen
Easy to get to ,train from Munich airport change at pasing.Garmisch has a nice town centre plenty of bars and Partenkirchen has a really cool old street that's like stepping back in time with some bars and we found a bar restaurant with an Oktoberfest style brass band.
You could have a day in the classic area. And a day on the glacier.
