Anyone got any experience of paying for ski carriage at the airport on Jet 2 charter flights (Crystal Edinburgh - Verona)? I tried to add on ski carriage today but Crystal tell me they're sold out. They say I can bring my skis to the airport to "go on standby". With it being Edinburgh I presume if they don't go, there won't be another flight to Verona for a week. Anyone ever taken that chance?
If not, has anyone used skicarraige.co.uk? They're not cheap but paying them a wedge of cash seems better than not getting to use the new planks I stupidly bought before booking ski carriage...

Happened to us one year there were loads of people paying cash for their skis. The airport/airline had stationed a woman near the check in desk just to sort out ski carriage. May be it's just cos they can charge you more at the airport than prebooking

Jet2 @ EDI have a reputation of leaving behind prebooked ski carriage so you will be taking a chance with trying on the day. I also strongly suspect that by standby they will mean you will have to hang around check in until they decide if they can take your skis. If they can't you'll have to find somewhere to stow them until you return.

Thanks chaps. I find it really odd: the Crystal website says they can only take 25 sets of skis. I realise they have a whole heap of other luggage to take but you can get 25 sets of skis in the back of a Volvo estate...

Why do you find it odd? Tour Operators are in business to make money. The more £35 (or whatever the charge is) they can rake in the more revenue they generate. If they could sell more space then they would so I doubt the limit is totally arbitrary although the 25 mentioned in the brochure is a guide as each aircraft type will be different.
If they didn't have a pre booking system then it could lead to a lot of disappointed customers at the airport if there was no more space. You would then have an issue with customers having to find somewhere to store the skis and probably having to repack as they are likely to have gear they need in the ski bag.
Having a charge will also discourage those who book space "just in case" when the possibility of then taking skis is as remote as my Euro millions coming up tomorrow night! 😁😁😁
I think the current system works quite well and would not be happy with a free for all at check in.

Crystal are doing well at the moment aren't they ---- Can't take your skis and can't provide ski guiding (glad I booked with Neilson.....!)

Just bumping this for information of anyone in a similar situation who are using Crystal/Jet2 charters this year and have been told by Crystal there is no ski carraige room left.
Out of the blue today I received an automated email from Crystal giving me log-in details for the Jet2 website to allow me to add extra bags/prebook seats etc.
The log-ins give access to booking of ski carraige which I have successfully done. To my great surprise, the price I paid - whilst not cheap - was actually £5 each way cheaper than that which Crystal advertise on their website.

Some of the 737 aircraft that Jet 2 have at Edinburgh are specialized 'quick change' aircraft that are used for freight overnight (the seats come out) - this means they are heavier than normal because of the equipment fitted to allow this. This means they can be weight limited if full. This is not meant as an excuse just an explanation. A bit like some of Flybe's smaller aircraft which are very limited in hold space.

Booked ski carriage at gatwick, injury means no skiing, therefore no skis needed. No refund on skis, still going on holiday but not skiing, husband is.

Think this is very true, can be useful to make it clear to them that either you go with your skis or not at all before handing over cash, somehow that seems to change things sometimes

It's not a Crystal issue, it's a fact with all TO's, Only so much weight is booked, and they sell it. When it's gone, it's gone.
Basically, if you want ski carriage, book early.

Holiday lover, yes I did. I saw the consultant on Monday, and the ligaments are healing well. The bad news is that I did have a fracture, but nothing is to be done now because 6 weeks have passed and it is "probably" healing as there is no sign of movement. Still have to wear my leg brace until the next appointment on 13 Jan, and have to work hard on my muscles to support the knee when it comes off. So the next holiday is not skiing but all about the après! As long as I don't fall over and break the other one. Not very happy really, it will be hard to sit and watch skiing. But, on another note, tried to reclaim ski carriage from crystal for non flying skis, and have been told unlikely to be refunded. Anyone at Gatwick on the Thomson flight to Innsbruck on the 17th Jan there is a spare place for one set of skis.

Holiday lover, my tibia, suspected on the X-rays, but the scan showed up the bruising and confirmed it. I am thinking that it must be a small fracture if the doctor is leaving me alone, but the first doctor was talking about plates.  I have another holiday booked in late March and am aiming to ski that one but I think I shall have a brace for confidence. Are you fully fit now?

@margaret, that was my guess. I'm as good as I will get. I have strategies to look after my knee but I'm biting the bullet and going for a mojo before the next trip as the giant brace, while protecting the ligaments, isn't helping with the stresses going through the joint.

Holiday lover. My injury is not as severe as yours, I am hoping that it will all settle in the fullness of time. I hate the brace I have to wear at the moment, no way could it be used for skiing. Quite a lot of pain/discomfort in getting everything working again. I am 61, and don't want to be old yet. But it has to be done! I just am keeping my fingers crossed that the doctor has made the right decisions. He was not the most approachable man! The only way is up ( to the top of the mountain!) and then down.

@margaret, the brace I have is a skiing one not the one used while healing....that one is in the lift with all the other paraphernalia. Yes it just has to be done..61 isn't old..only 7 years older than me...fingers crossed for you

I used to use FlyBe several years ago on regular commutes between Manchester and Southampton. At the time, their punctuality wasn't so clever and quite often flights got bumped onto the next one...hence the nickname. That said, not used them for a while now, seem to have improved somewhat!

Thanks for that. I drive those lovely turbo-props and get somewhat tetchy when people still call us that without much frame of reference as to the improvements that have been made recently. That said, Lucylou is right about ski carriage issues on the Dash8. We've done charters for Inghams from Manchester into Turin for the last 2 seasons and if I remember rightly Inghams only guaranteed 10 pairs of skis being taken. Unfortunately if skis were left behind it was the airline that suffered on social media NOT the tour operator
