Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France ski and snowboarding in January

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi Snowheads

I am thinking of trying France this year and wondering where is best place for snow in early January. Myself and my son (20) board and my daughter(1Cool skis we like blues and easy reds and need somewhere we can have fun on a night (well they do I guess I won't be able to keep up with them) I don't have a massive budget but wouldn't mind sharing a chalet if it gives the opportunity to meet likeminded people. Any ideas? We usually do Soldeu but want to try somewhere new.

If you want somewhere with a bit of life in the evening, your kids will love Meribel or Val d'Isere. Both are huge ski areas with plenty of cruising blues. Val can be tricky at the end of the day, but in early Jan won't be as busy. You can always get the lift back down anyway.
In terms of snow Val d'Isere normally has some of the best snow early snow in the alps due to it's location and height and is normally open from early December. Meribel Is a bit lower and can be more sketchy on early snow, but you should still be ok in early Jan.
One thing to note is that this is the quietest time of year, so should be plenty of deals about nearer the time with English chalet companies.

Yes, wait and see how the snow is. If it's good somewhere like Morzine might be better value than Val D'isere and there are absolutely tons of chalets. And some local snowheads who can provide invaluable information.

Tigne is always a good bet for snow early and late season. Huge ski area. you can get good value accommodation there, probably a little cheaper than Meribel and Val....both great resorts though.

But night life, for years I heard it was a party town, been there 7 times and can't say I've ever found the parties. Plenty of bars though.
