Skiing one of theruns in the Jackson Hole bowls I came out of my binding. Obviously it wasn't long before I came out of the other. Fortunately I managed to get a hold of the ski that came off second but the first one was a good 10 metres above me in waist deep powder. Despite being relatively close and having one ski to help pull myself up the slope it took me a very sweaty 20 minutes to retrieve the first ski and I thought that if only I'd put my traces on I could have pulled the trace to get the ski back so much quicker. Has anyone else used traces in this manner?
I know some people on this forum deride the use of traces but in this instance it would have been a godsend

Ok, so you've got some snow y" smug git!, in the rare instanc that I'm in deep snow, my powder ribbons have been a godsend in this manner.

It may have worked, but since traces are usually less than 2m long, you would have had to have had a perfect deployment of the trace down the slope to be of much help.
Also, depending on how the ski was aligned, I think you would be more likely to snap the trace or bend the binding arm, than pull the ski out.

@dsoutar, they are a pita but have saved me hours of searching. I know because I have spent hours searching when I forgot the traces.

@PowderAdict, Surely its not there to pull out the ski - just to find it quicker so you can dig it out as normal and get back to skiing. As you search with a pole you are more likely to snag the trace and then follow it to the ski.

@chocksaway, The OP asked if anyone had used a powder trace to pull out a buried ski, since they were struggling to climb up hill in deep powder.
I use ResQski finders on all my skis, so powder tracers are obsolete.

It wasn't so much pulling it out as it was more or less sitting on top of the snow, it was more the ability to obviate the need to struggle back up the slope to retrieve it

@dsoutar, I would be wary of actually attaching a ski to my body. A colleague nearly broke his back using old style touring skis with attached line when he fell and the ski came whipping round and dug into his back. Not good seeing as he was out off piste on his own at the time.

But that's the thing with traces, you attach one end to the ski then fold the rest up and stuff it up you ski Pant leg under the elasticated bit so when you lose a ski it pulls it all back out

I spent the week before Christmas in Morzine last year so I've paid my no snow dues, thank you!

my turn this year, I turned down my brother's invitation to join him in Canada this season (lots of snow already) in favour of the birthday bash in Italy, poo!
