Hi a group of 6 boarders and skiers looking at going to zermatt next year was just wondering of anyone that has been can give me abit of info on the apres and nightlife average price for beer etc! The ski area looks really good and we can get a pretty good deal for the end of February just concerned about the cost of things on the mountain and resort. Thanks in advance

Apres ski is quite expensive, there is a nice champagne bar as you come down one of the rides, I have only been there once but I quite liked it. Rather too crowded at times though...

It's an expensive resort before you factor in the terrible exchange rate. The skiing is superb though.

Best places will be the North Wall Bar, Sparkies or the Cable Car / Bubble, all run by brits, tell them I sent you, know them all well

If you are worried about the cost of a beer, I would go somewhere else. The lift pass is the most expensive in Europe.

Beer-wise you're looking at 4.50/5CHF for a small (3 deci) or 8CHF-ish for a large (5-deci), but it obviously varies!

BUt the skiing is amazing. It is really quite expensive, but good.
Haven't been for more than a long weekend in years. But I'd go again tomorrow. But to have fun you have to suspend disbelief regards prices.

Things are cheaper on the Cervinia side for lunches and coffee breaks. They take Swiss francs, but to avoid being fleeced on exchange rates, take some euros with you.

Don't agree on the skiing in Zermatt being excellent.
Often icy (very dry climate because of being inneralpine thus lack of fresh snow), poor off-piste because of the glaciers, long standing in long lifts, often boring flat pistes, especially on top.
Zermatt has the village, the Matterhorn and the altitude. Which are definitely very worthwhile
But especially if you are looking for challenges, Zermatt might be disappointing and thus (very) overrated.

I have to agree with this. Definitely overrated. The other side of the mountain (Saas Fee) is much better IMO.

Just been to Switzerland as part of a tour around central Europe, outside of the Ski resorts it's probably 1/3 more expensive than a normal place in France (mainly exchange rate i think). 2 beers a glass of wine a pizza and a salad £65 at a cafe in Geneva hotels averaged at £300 p/n (nice hotels) i'd expect £240 ish in London for a similar hotel.

The Trifti bumps are world class but rarely open before February.
There are/were some superb off piste decents from the Briethorn 4000m and down to the Gornergletcher from the Gornergrat that are quite easy in the Spring, though I believe the exit from the Gorngletcher is now more difficult because it has retreated so far.

They used to be world class back in the 80's:
But since then the Triftji glacier has retreated, exposing a massive rock in the centre and totally changing the shape of the slope.......

Precisely what I was thinking. The first time I was there was in over the head powder, so much of it I didn't realize it was a bump field until much later.
I'm sure they're rubbish if there's no snow on them. That's also true of anywhere else I can think of though. I'd rather be in a poor resort in good snow than in a great resort in bad snow.
Certainly Zermatt's over rated, as is Whistler and lots of other places. Ride them all and see what you think. I have been back to Zermatt many times winter and summer though, so it does have something going for it.
I doubt it's a great location for guzzling lots of alcohol and that sort of "night life"

And also the descents down to the Gornergletscher are awesome, the Schwartztor is great, but over-skied, the easier route (Theodulgletscher) under the Klein Matterhorn cable car is nice and the run down from the Zwillingsjoch between Castor and Pollux is breathtaking, however all are on heavily glaciated terrain and should only be skied with a local guide, who will also know how best to negotiate the glacier tongue!
