With the first lifts due to open in one month from today it's time to start this seasons reports. The only notable development in the region over the summer is the construction of a new base amenities building at The Remarkables. They have had major delays with the construction but latest info is that due to long work days and seven day shifts they are expected to be finished in time. There has been a bit of snow in the last couple of days with the snow line down to about the bottom of the lowest lifts. I estimate about half a meter in totall so a start of a snow base.

With a light snow fall last night and colder temperatures Coronet Peak started up its snow making system and have been making snow for the last 20 hours. With the colder temperatures set to continue for some days and some considerable snow due on Sunday/Monday it looks like a good start to the winter. With El Nino weather patterns developing across the pacific the locals (for what it's worth) are predicting a good season for this part of the country. El Nino does tend to bring more colder south westerly winds to the south of NZ and this can mean more snow. Lets hope so.

@Sarge McSarge, I'm staying in Auckland with my daughter, son in law,and new grandson who are currently living in NZ. Your latest report sounds good as they are taking me to Queenstown in the second half of June and I'm hoping to be able to ski while I'm there.

@Iski, Hopefully it will be good by the time you get down here. Last week of June is our winter festival with lots of events on both on the snow and down in town so plenty of things to keep you entertained.

Have just woken up to 20cms of snow around the house and still snowing lightly. There will have been more than this on the mountains. This along with snow making will be setting up the snow base for the winter. With nearly three weeks until the scheduled opening of the first lifts it is all looking good in this part of the world.

Well Coronet Peak and Cardrona both are due to open one week from today and conditions are looking pretty good. From what can be seen on the web cams Cardrona has a very good coverage for this early in the season. Coronet Peak has good coverage on the main trails but still a bit thin away from the snow guns especially on the lower areas but still pretty good this early. Weather is supposed to warm up early in the week with some rain but then cooling down again and more snow forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Yesterday we had very warm winds and rain which has done quite a bit of damage to the snow. But the good news is that it cooled down last night and a few cm's of snow had fallen by this morning. During the day the showers have continued and the snow line has lowered considerably with it forecast to get down to about 400m overnight. The snow showers are due to continue for the next five or six days so it's looking good foe the season start this coming saturday.

With only light snow showers at Coronet Peak over the last few days the only descent skiing is on the man made snow but given the area covered by this people have been enjoying the first few days of the season. The Remarkables are due to open this coming weekend and also the start of the winter festival on Friday evening it is starting to get a bit busier around the district. On the snow forecast there is positive news with 50 cm's plus forecast for Thursday and ongoing cooler weather. Fingers crossed the forecasters are on the ball.

@Sarge McSarge, I'll also be keeping my fingers crossed as we will be flying to Queenstown on Friday. Do you have any recommendations regarding whether Saturday or Sunday would be best to ski at Coronet Peak?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Iski, Saturday could have a few snow showers clearing as the day goes on and Sunday is supposed to be fine. But given the speed with which weather comes and goes here anything could happen

While we didn't get 100 cm's we did get 45 plus in yesterdays storm. And light snow is forecast for the next four days so good timing with the winter festival starting this evening and running till the end of next week. On the negative side The Remarkables has delayed it's opening date due to delays in completion of the new base facilities building. Those who have the Remarkables only season pass can use it at Coronet Peak until opening day.

Since the last big snow fall there has been a number of light falls which have continued to build the snow coverage. At Coronet all the main trails (pistes for the Europeans) are well covered with a nice groomed surface. Else where it's quite variable with a mixture of heavy snow and ski packed areas with a bit of foliage showing on the ridges. One more snow fall and it will all be in excellent condition. Cold and clear for the next few days with more snow for next weekend.

Last few days have been cold and sunny with good conditions on the snow. Yesterday morning we had some light rain onto frozen roads causing havoc for drivers with quite a few crashes in the area. Turned into quite a warm day but cooled down in the evening with 5 to 10 cm's of fresh snow on the mountains. This morning is clear and cold again with icy roads and good skiing. The Remarkables open today only one week late due to construction delays. Looking like the snow up there will be great for those that are not working. More snow forecast for the next couple of days so all is looking good here.

We did have high winds that stripped snow off the ridges and closed lifts about 10 days ago leaving quite a firm snow surface but with a number of small snow falls over the last week conditions are looking good on all the local mountains. School holidays have brought a lot of people into town especially Australians. So busy on the snow at the weekends. Hope to get some photos for you all tomorrow.

Last few days have been glorious with loads of sun, no crowds and lovely snow conditions. A few cm's the day after the last report helped to keep the surface on tip top condition. Groomed runs are in excellent condition every morning and the ungroomed is mainly softish ski packed snow with the odd icy bit where the wind was at work but in general it is all good fun. Weather will change at the weekend with a bit of rain turning to snow as the storm will turn southerly latter on. Looks like it will be back to sunshine by about Tuesday morning.

After the rain created a nasty ice surface we have had just enough sticky snow to get back too a lovely smooth mountain. All the local mountains have good coverage and lots of happy faces out there. A little more snow forecast for tonight then tomorrow should clear up. After that we are expecting a few days of unsettled weather with the possibility of some more snow.

We have had a few small snow falls in the last week (continuing as I type) so the skiing has remained great with all runs on all of the mountains open and in good condition. The weather should be clearing this afternoon and the staying fine for a few days so we can enjoy the conditions. I have a few photos that I shall post later.

We have had light snow falls on each of the last three nights which have done a lovely job of refreshing the mountains and mainly fine days to make the most of it. The forecast is for snow to low level on Saturday and into Sunday which should bring more of the lovely white stuff. All of the local ski areas have been enjoying good conditions all winter and it looks to continue through to the end of the season in early October.

Another couple of light falls since my last report have continued the pattern of the winter. Lots of sun with mainly cool temperatures have kept the snow in good condition although we are well into spring with only a couple of weeks until the lifts close

The Remarkables and Treble Cone closed for the season yesterday and one week left for Coronet Peak and two for Cardrona to wrap up our season. Snow is holding up well with typical spring conditions, hard in the morning and softening as the day goes on with great coverage on all the main runs. We have had a week of beautiful weather with mainly light winds and clear sunny skies. Tomorrow will be my last day for this season
