Thanks for tuning in last season record amount of hits (111684)
Plenty of snow still on the hill, much more than recent seasons. Probably will not all melt until late July /August.
The lifts have been been still for nearly 2 weeks so its about time to start thinking about the following season Very Happy Very Happy

@stanton, We're off already, coincidentally I fired off a couple of emails yesterday and booked our trips for next season, too early to even think about it really but great to know it's done......just hope the £ v € stays strong!

Comparing the skier days vs. thread reads for various ski areas is interesting, and revealing.
For St Anton, about 200K Brit skier (1 million all nations PA) days IIRC for circa 110K page views = >1 view per 2 Brit skier days.
All UK skiing, about 300K skier days for circa 45K page views (total for LD, England/Wales & Scotland threads) = <1 view per 6 skier days

@moffatross thanks for the stats.
Overnight stays is ONLY valid for St Anton,St Chris and down valley. It does not include Stuben,Lech Zurs.
Skier days for the Whole Arlberg Lift System
Is an altogether different number.
The whole area gets thousands of day trippers
every weekend.

@stanton, Coming to St Anton for biking and hiking week end August, any ideas yet regards potential volumes of traffic, in particular heavy commercial vehicles using the pass? Work has started now and the diversion is in progress so maybe you know already what it looks like? Hopefully most will go round but I believe local companies can use the pass.

The police were around at the end of April stopping non-local (IIRC, non-local is outside a radius of a couple '00kms) wagons. When I headed back it was noticeable that there was more traffic heading over the pass, but nothing drastic and didn't really slow the journey.

The demolition of the Gampen has started. Most of the corner closest to the Gampenbahn has already gone.
They certainly did not waste any time getting going - there is still plenty of snow on the ground. They breed builders tough in Austria. Over here, a little drizzle and they down tools and expect to be paid for a rain day.
I think I will miss the old Gampen. It was tired and fairly small, but it had character. I wonder what they will do with all the trophy heads from the walls?

@ulmerhutte, Gampen Restaurant ground is huge. I think they will give a Rendl Style Look with a massive terrace maybe even two floors . Architect Plans being kept very secret right now.
The new 1.3km access road (Arlbergstraße Flexenpass) is taking a shape.. No messing about here either !!

Yikes! This thread is the first I've heard of the Arlberg mega lift project. Linked skiing from St Anton as far as Warth/Schroecken!? Amazing if that comes off. How much piste would that include??
Is it definitely a goer then?

6@mountainaddict,
Hopefully NO Piste!
It will be just a transport system.

It looks like the Alber / Ski School building east of the Gampen has also been demolished. Not unexpected.
@stanton, what about the garages further east. Are they part of the redevelopment?

The Alber ski school used to be the Top Station of the Kandaharbahn Funicular.
Im not sure if they are going as far as the Pisten Bully garages. You never know they may make some Huge Eastern facing Terrace !

How about that! Never knew - the funicular was before my time - and now too late to look at the building in that light. C'est la vie.

Also the Top Station of the very old 2 man Kappal Chair lift was converted into what is now Kappal Restaurant. The Bar area is where the chairs would egress the hill, the engine/motor was uptairs & where the restaurant is used to be the lifties area.

The bar I know as the Eisbar, just down from the Kappalbahn? Fascinating! Any other gems of history, @stanton?
I started skiing in StA in 2002. The funicular was already gone and the railway had been moved for the World Championships. The old top station of the predecessor to the Mattunbahn was still there. Now gone.
New since then:
- Galzigbahn
- Rendlbahn + West Terminal rebuild
- Tanzboden
- Arlenmahder
- Valfagehr
- Muggengrat
- Hexaboden
- Auenfeldjet
- and probably some I have missed.
...that is a lot of investment!

@ulmerhutte, Remember the funicular well, the train going through town and queuing at the barriers etc. Awesome place.
Who remembers the long drag from just below the bottom station of Zammermoosbahn (top part of the poste split) to top of Osthang? and the drag from below Gampberg on R1 down back up? Great lifts on a bad weather day those two.

Remember both of them. The bottom of the Tobelift was in a choke point, which often became mayhem in busy times.
Apart from the lifts, the other change I have noticed is that there are so many more weekenders and short stays. Once upon a time, Saturday was considerably quieter than the rest of the week. Not so much now.

Nope. Does it roughly follow the bottom half of routes 2 and 3 in Andy Thurner's book, ie Maienwasen and Maienplatt?

@kitenski, no it just means more investigations to allow both sides to prove their case. The ASV will have to prove that there is an impact and the lift company will have to prove there is not. slows the whole process down to an ancient snail's pace.
