@fark, welcome to snowheads both resorts are likely to have OK snow conditions but finding accommodation for your dates is likely to be difficult as most accommodation providers will hope to sell the whole of Christmas week. So if I were you I'd look at that problem first. You might not have a lot of choice, frankly. Maybe try the Solutions Room at Chalets Direct and be prepared to be flexible about destination. Good luck.

fark, prediction of snow conditions 2 months away requires Phoenix feathers, newt's gizzards and at least one witch.
Conditions can be different either side of the Vanoise lift, but little to do with altitude.
I would stick with your 1800 accommodation - as pam w has posted: you will be lucky to find anything decent for your 4 days elsewhere.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I was in Les Arcs last December the week before you. We skied every day, though for the first couple of days there were limited runs open. We had a group in our chalet who had a car and they drove to La Plagne one day and said the snow was better but it was a PITA getting there and they'd been better staying in Les Arcs. The Vanoise express cable car wasn't working as there was no snow that low down so driving was the only option.
All in all I had a great week - not ski in ski out, doing the same runs a few times but the beer was good, the air clear and I wasn't working. What's not to like!

Impossible to say what the snow conditions will be like that week this far in advance. I've skied Les Arcs every Christmas for the last 12 years and there has always been a large proportion of the pistes open and skiable. Even last year, which was a notoriously poor start to the season, there was enough skiing available for the week, although it was a good thing that many of th key pistes have artificial snowmaking on them. Sometimes it can be great, sometimes poor, but we won't know how good conditions will be until much closer to the date.
I don't think there's much of a difference in snow conditions between Les Arcs and La Plagne. If it's going to be poor in one resort it's likely to be poor in the other resort. Obviously there will be variety, so a quiet piste in Les Arcs will likely have better conditions than a busy piste in La Plagne (and vice versa), especially when snow conditions are generally poor, but overall I don't think there will be enough of a difference to make one resort better than the other, especially if you already have a booking that you'd have to cancel.
My advice would be stick with what you've booked and then start checking the webcams, snow reports and weather forecasts on 12 December when Les Arcs and La Plagne open for their winter season.

I know we all do that, but its not really any use to fark, come December 12, who is worried about conditions and thinking of moving.
For his peace of mind, might be better to resist logging onto Snowheads completely from now on
