After skiing in many resorts in France over the past 15 years, we think a change is overdue! So looking to Italy for a comfortable hotel, in beautiful scenery. Any pointers? Thanks.

@Kiters, too broad a question. Too many answers. A bit more specificity would help.

Fair point. Don't mind pushing the boat out as its a big anniversary, looking at Bardonchia, Madonna di Campiglio or Cortina

For the first time, I will have skied more days in Italy than France this season and I'm not regretting that a bit.
IMHO Dolomites are the most beautiful and Sela Ronda area is the most extensive piste skiing.
That's why we user the Portavescovo in Arabba every year for the Birthday Bash ( see S11BB ) - it's comfortable.
There are other areas with other strengths but as @under a new name says, it's a very open question that you've asked.

@Kiters, you're looking at 3 pretty different resorts/areas, and each could be more/less desirable dependent on when you're planning on going. Italy offers a different vibe to France too, I think, but I really like both that and the skiing there.

@Kiters, We really enjoyed Madonna di Campiglio a couple of years ago. Have a chat or send a PM to Campiglio who knows everything about the place and runs a TO specialising in MdC. He did a great job for us.

I appreciate its a big question to ask, but only in early stages, but thanks for the info so far.

@Kiters, hmm, celebration?
Courmayeur is very chi-chi and has some truly excellent dining on and off mountain.
Special hotels that I know? Mascognaz or Rascard Frantze above Champoluc f'rinstance.
A very interesting article in Easyjet magazine recently on the gastro skiing of Alta Badia.

Bardonchia, = no experience, sorry
Madonna di Campiglio = Charming, nice town, very opulent feel to it
or Cortina = much bigger town, pleasant enough but doesn't have the charm of Madonna d'C. Maybe we caught it on a bad day but it didn't seem as opulent either.

Madonna is lovely and probably has the best dressed dogs outside Megeve. I guess Madonna is Italy's Lech or Megeve. The skiing is typical upmarket resort, convenient and flattering. It's technically Brenta Dolomites but just the scenery is just as imposing as the main Dollies. It's linked to Folgarida which is a school trip classic resort although has some great steep forest skiing.
Corvara and San Cassiano are not quite as chic but offer far more skiing with Sella Ronda links. Nearby and linked Arabba has more challenge
Cortina is another chic resort with the skiing flattering rather than demanding,

@Kiters, one important question is how "convenient" you want your skiing (as in, how long it takes from the door of your hotel to skiing, and how big a lift-linked area you are looking for.

@Kiters, Madionna can be convenient by @pam w's definition but you do need to be careful with your choice of accommodation to make sure you're near one of the main lifts.

Totally agree !!
Here in Serre in the Co-Prop where we have our apartment, out of ten six are owned by Italians living in Turin.
I regularly do road trips to Italy, from here in Serre, Claviere and the Milky Way is only 30 mins.
Beyond the Via Lattea I have skied many other areas (including the resort that can't be named) and I'm amazed as to why the Italians should choose to buy here when they have such amazing locations close to Turin.
The reason is one of Italian fashion etc for Turinese, it is very chique to go to France ??
As for time to resort, Turin airport which I again regularly go to, it is probably the one of the easiest and fastest routes to a ski station.
Day lift passes in Sauze D'Oulx - (and it is not pronounced Ooose) : food / drinks is nigh on 50% cheaper than here in Serre.
I could go on, plus Italians don't tend to track out the off piste as much.
One of the most "trending" ski tour areas is the Val Maira and that was truly an amazing week.
Tomorrow, Easter Monday we have "cake" with our Italian friends here, and again I'l ask them the question, why France?
And according to my Italian neighbours, Sestriere is regarded as one of the most chiquest (sorry to use that again) stations in Itlay.
And if any of you has the time, down town, central Turin is well worth a visit, amazing architecture, food markets and so much more. In fact I'm there again on Thursday.
Ciao

And they are Torinese. Noted, says my son, for their cosmopolitan, outward looking, attitudes.
On the Cote d'Azur loads of Italians have their boats in French marinas because they say the marinas, and the whole surrounding public infrastructure is much better than in Italy. And I think the whole property buying (and owning) business can be more straightforward in France than in Italy - even for Italians. Bureaucracy is too often used as a dirty word but a functioning bureaucracy underpins a well-governed state.

Anyone remember service? When somebody served you a drink and it didn't feel like you were ruining their day? and they charged a reasonable price? That's Italian skiing...

While in Italy this winter we had an evening out with some Italian Special Forces. The were all mountain and ski instructors within their regiment.
I spoke to them at length about skiing in Italy and they recommended Cortina and Corvara. I have never been to either, however they have extensively skied and climbed all the areas within and beyond Italy. So good enough for me.
I have booked Corvara for Feb 2016.
Kind regards,
DJ
