Poster: A snowHead

we are flying into grenoble for a weeks skiing in courchevel 1850. We have hired a compact car with snowchains. Should we hire winter tyres or have got a 4x4. If anyone can give us advice on route, road conditions and alternatives it would be very much appreciated. We already have the routemaster from www.michelin.com

No, a compact car with chains is perfect.

Erm, well from Gregre airport there is not much choice really, drive to Grenoble, take the by-pass (lots of speed traps around Grenoble these days), drive up the A41 to Albertville then Moutiers (camera in tunnel on way back) then Courchevel. Yesterday there was snow in the valley but you will be unlikely to see any snow before the turn for Courchevel at Brides LesBians from now till the end of season.

Pascha,
Sorry disagree with davidof would always recommend the snow tyres as a priority and have chains as backup. Any advantage you can get when driving on icy / snow covered roads (not necessarily bad enough for chains!) has to be a bonus. I paid 25 euros extra a day for Ski pack (tyres / chains / Ski rack) pricey as you also have to have at least group C car( thru Avis) but in my opinion worth the money for peace of mind + safety.

I would agree with Type23. For Courcheval 1850 I would have thought the snow types are more relevant because in order to have income you can bet the people in Courcheval will try hard to clear the road. Snowchains are needed "during" or immediately after a heavy dump before the local have time to clear the road.
Also many UK mortorists may not realise by the time one needs to put the chains on there may not be a safe place conveniently available to put them on so snow types are far better choice.
There is no mountain pass between Grennoble and Courchevel that makes wearing a set of snow chains mandatory by the French police.
With the exception at the far end of Val Thoren the car, with snow tyres, should be good enough for travel around the 3 Vallees and the Valmorel valley. If time permitting I would use it to travel the 17 miles (from Moutier) to Bourg to cover La Plagne, Les Arcs and get up La Rosisere from its lowest chairlift at 1176m.

Even though sno cleared, still ice on roads in 1850 last week and snow only seemed to be cleare on "main" roads. Would suggest snow tyres. Anyway piste conditions are amazing
