Planning a short trip 8-12 April. Anyone any experience of MdC early April ? Does the snow hold up OK ? Is there much north facing terrain ? Or too far South for April ?
Thanks

Yes, we were there last year. End of march through to early April. I can't remember which way the slopes faced as we never saw the sun. It snowed all day, every day. I gather it is pretty snow sure generally. Majority of slopes face East and West. I did look at the webcams for a few weeks after we returned and I think the snow was good right through April and into May. I wouldn't worry. It's a great place. You'll have fun.
If you haven't already, speak to Dominic at Enchanted Holidays. He specialises exclusively in MdC and was able to get a far better deal than we could by going DIY. He's a one-man band TO and a lovely chap. Worth a call at the very least.

Not that it will have much bearing, but I went several years ago for last week in March - amazing snow-coverage. Some of the best conditions I've seen.

My pleasure. You provided a very friendly, efficient service with great advice. It was a genuine pleasure to do business with you. Stick around in here Campiglio, there are often requests for info on Italy and MdC in particular. You could also do worse than add a website link to your signature line. I'm pretty sure that's allowed.

We're in the process of building a new website with a lot more hotels and services. This will come on line in approx 3 weeks.
The tourist board and the local hotel association, recently approved us as their UK official operator, so we think this deserves a brand new website.
If anybody is interested, we'e quite happy to just give professional advice, with no commitment to us.

Campiglio, welcome to snowHeads. As a big fan of the area (been twice), will watch the site developments with interest. Would certainly hope to go to the area again at some point.

Thanks for your welcome.
It's not my intention to use this forum for advertising Enchanted Holidays, but do feel free to ask if you have any questions, at all, about Madonna di Campiglio.
We know the resort like the backs of our hands, and most of the hoteliers and other service providers are not just business colleagues but close friends.

The only change from last season is the removal of the Belvedere drag lift. There is talk of replacing it with a new gondola lift, but this is currently only hearsay.
There is also a new apres ski bar open at the bottom of Groste

Really good to have a Brenta Dolomites expert on here again (the last one kinda flounced...or flouncio'd....off).
Hope you stick around, Campiglio - I think the area is a real gem, so some on-the-ground advice etc will most welcome/valuable, I'm sure

As long as you will have me, I'd be delighted to give the best advice I can.
I'm in the resort next week - we are the main organiser and promoter of Madonna's very first snow polo event next January, and I'm expecting to sign off contracts with the tourist office and the mayor's office.

Thanks for that info, for the last couple of years we've been that drag hasn't be in commission. seemed a useful place for a lift to be to get people out of that area of town. How far up the mountain are the rumors saying a gondola would go?

The removal of the Belvedere drag lift has left the Hotel Touring without it's ''ski out'' capability, although the piste is still in commission, so it is still possible to ski back to the hotel and, of course, almost back to Olimpionico Sport.
The planned new gondola is rumoured to be from the drag lift's current bottom station to the top of Spinale.
Currently, the lift company is reeling from the cost of installing the express lift from Patascoss to Tulot in Pinzolo.
The prevailing opinion in town is that they want to comfortably recover financially before committing to a new lift.

Campiglio, thanks for that. Do they really need another lift to the top of Spinale from there? A better option IMHO would be to improve the two old chairs that come up from Campo Carol or the chair over to Folgarida, although I suspect that one belongs to Folgarida.

The Malgette (sp) chair? Quite long and sloowww. I'd guess it "belongs" to Folgarida.

I sort of get why the new lift would need to go to Spinale. Obviously, it must go above the tree line, and for practicality and cost effectiveness, should take the most direct route to it's conclusion. It just happens that this brings it to the top of Spinale. This also allows passengers to reach a ski off point that links with chairs etc.
The lift from Malghette Aut to Monte Spolverino is indeed the responsibilty of the lift company operating in Folgarida.
The other two chairs I think you are describing are Nube D'Argento from Campo Carlo Magno to Chalet Fiat and Rododendro Express from Groste mid station linking with Groste Express at a higher point, although these last two are only a few years old. Nube D'Argento is being considered for upgrade.

Campiglio, chairs 39 & 40 on the map Nubo D'Oro followed by Nube D'Argento both seemed antiquated beyound years to me. The Groste Express is OK

OK,
The two double chairs - these are under review for replacement (with new chairs), but as with the Belvedere, the lift company needs to recoup some of the cost from construction of the Pinzolo Express.
FYI, this was originally supposed to have a mid station below Tulot, but conservationists stopped this as the proposed mid station was planned where wild turkeys roost

Can understand why they need a return on the Pinzolo Express it must have been a major undertaking and in my experience is always quiet. Is Tulot the Pinzolo side where it looks like a run should goto?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Tulot is the main lift from Pinzolo town centre to Malga Cioca. The original design for the express lift was intended to link with Malga Cioca, then continue to the top of Doss Del Sabion. Because of the conservationist issue, it had to be completely diverted and now finishes at Puza Daifo
Tulot does have a great black run from top to bottom, with the same name as the lift.
The express way hasn't really caught on despite special offers with ski passes.
The problem seems to be that people are worried about being stuck in Pinzolo when the lift closes each day.

Wow the original lift plan was ambitious! I also get why people are concerned with being stuck in Pinzolo. Every time we've done it we've come back in good time.
Thanks again for the info

We are currently in negotiations with the lift company and the tourist office to supply a private bus service from the bottom of Tulot back to Madonna for those who get stranded in Pinzolo when the express lift closes. The idea is for our service to leave Pinzolo at 1830 hours daily, stopping at Palu, Spinale, Piazza Righi then going on to Campo Carlo Magno. Obviously, we will be charging for tickets, at around 10 Euros per person, compared to 25 Euros for a taxi.
We are hoping that such a service will help to allay the concerns of people who miss the last lift back to Patascoss.
However, I doubt we will have this service up and running for the 2014/15 season, if at all.
Dealing with Italian bureaucracy is ''interesting'' to say the least.

Cacciatore, Pinzolo's a nice little ski area, not too busy and some nice tree lined runs. Never been down the black Campiglio, is talking about because I've always had my daughter with me.

I do agree - I like Pinzolo (nice and compact)
When I first got the nod about the express lift going in, I considered adding Pinzolo to our portfolio as a less expensive alternative for those who didn't have Madonna di Campiglio money to spend, but wanted to enjoy Madonna's ski area.
The marketing manager of the lift company and her counterpart from the Pinzolo tourist board invited me to join them for a few hours on the slopes, and I was delighted to take them up on this offer.
Big mistake!!
I have been skiing for over 40 years, but they made me look like a rank novice.
We covered 6 pistes in less than 45 minutes.
I thought my days had come to an end.

The season before last, having done a fair few of them accidentally in a day, my son, nephew and I, set ourselves the challenge to do all the Black runs (IIRC about 19 of them?) on the map in one day.
Striking out from Folgarida, on our first attempt we came up a little short and had to ditch the final 3 in order to get home.
To their credit though, the boys insisted we give it another shot the following day.
With the extra day's experience giving us a better understanding of the lay of things we made it... just!
I do particularly like the one from MALGA CIOCA down to TULOT.
It's a lovely area - I could possibly be quite receptive to being lured back there.
Campiglio, we should probably have a wee chat

I've been following our website designer's work and the more work he does, the more impatient I become for the finished article.
Our current website is now looking a bit dated, and I'm reluctant to update it, mainly for financial reasons.
We have so many new hotels and services that it seems to me that the most practical solution is just to wait for the new site to come on-line.
Las season, we had only 1 Michelin star restaurant in Madonna di Campiglio.
This coming season, we will have 3.
Also, the Hotel Cerana Relax has been completely renovated, inside and out, and the old broken down Hotel Caminetto has been purchased by the Lorenzetti family.
It's due for demolition, and I think something very special is going to take it's place.
We now have 2 x 5 star hotels with the addition of the Alpen Suite being upgraded in April, and the Bio Hotel Hermitage has been upgraded to 4 star superior.
Lots happening

In the end we went to Ischgl last year but have just booked flights to Verona for 1st to 5th April 2015 and accomodation in Campiglio (cancelable). Really keen to try the resort -looks great for our needs. Guess if snow is not great we'll switch to elsewhere last minute but fingers crossed. One thing I did notice last year was that whilst the resort was open till when advertised in April, a number of the lifts closed during the week we would have arrived -lack of demand rather that lack of snow I guess. Hopefully the majority of the place will be open Easter week though.

You should be OK, but the lifts close when the pistes lose their their snow cover at the bottom. Generally this starts with the express lift to Pinzolo, then Pradalago, followed by Cinque Laghi (the south facing slopes). The last to close are usually Spinale and Groste.
However, unless the resort experiences very hot early Spirng weather conditions, you should be OK.
