Poster: A snowHead

Can't see this answered anywhere here but apologies if I've missed it. Question raised by a friend who had an accident skiing last week. Are there any policies that cover medical costs when back in the UK? His normal work medical cover didn't cover skiing injuries and he's had to pay the private medical costs himself as he needed it sorted quickly rather than wait for NHS

@dsoutar, I seem to recall holidaylover got Physio back in the UK with her insurance.
Your friend is making it clear they are self funding. When I was doing that I got special prices.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes it seems quite common for self-funding to pay less.

Can't remember what I was asking about but it was essentially the question of self funding paying less than insurance and was told no because that would be insurance fraud, think it may have been vet bills.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Self-funding may have more restrictive terms than insured e.g. access to fewer clinics. So not fraud, because different terms. It's a provider issue anyway, not a patient issue.

You'll need to Register first of course.

I have found myself paying more for self funded physio than on BUPA! The physio's standard rate was apparently more than the max rate BUPA pays for physio, so if you're on BUPA they take their max rate off your allowance, but if you're paying yourself, you pay the phsio their full rate. Crazy.

I dislocated my shoulder skiing and on my return went to my GP, he referred me to the local hospital where I was seen in a couple of days and operated on within 2 weeks. All on the NHS of course. I doubt if giving a bung to the surgeon would have made it any faster.

yes I got £500 worth of physio on my travel insurance. I paid direct and claimed it back when I hit £500. I get a discount as I'm in for the long haul.

Cheers - I'll have a look at the policy details as it's something I've never given much thought about. Obviously too late for my mate - complex collarbone break whilst jumping (haven't got the full story yet and he's no youngster). He's a keen cyclist too so that'll queer his pitch for a while

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
