Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Massive Avalanche in Andorra

 Poster: A snowHead

Triggered at Grau Roig during control work, you wouldn't want to be in the path of this beauty. The Pyrenees had some risk 5 conditions before this slide.

Pic Baix del Cubil, adjacent to where they run the Freeride World Qualifier in Grandvalira. The debris ran pretty close to the Cubil chairlift; they're lucky they didn't take it out! (That already happened in another Pyrenean resort last week, as a result of a similar control exercise.)

There's a lot of snow in the Pyrenees at the moment, and indeed for the third year running the French Pyrenees have some of the greatest snow depths in the world right now. In the previous two winters, Cauterets was the world leader at around this time of year, and this year Piau Engaly was in second place on Sunday with 540cm, just 30cm less than the leader (a Japanese resort).

All three road connections between France and Aragón (Spain) were closed last week, and the risk of avalanche remains high throughout the range.

It'll be level 3 in all orientations and all altitudes; the Chequered Flag thread has details of the daily bulletin for Andorra. The translation of the bulletin for tomorrow is:

"The recent rainfall up to 2400m, together with the higher temperatures, has helped the snowpack to consolidate. The snow has humidified to some depth, and so with the return of colder weather tomorrow the snowpack will consolidate further, although there remains a possibility of purges or slides tomorrow morning prior to the temperature drop on slopes where there remains sufficient overloading of snow. The snowfall predicted during the day, possibly up to 15cm, will settle upon on accumulations. The NE wind, which will increase in strength as the day progresses, will create new accumulations, and these slabs may well be triggered by the weight of a single skier."

On the plus side, I guess Pic Baix del Cubil is a now a goer, if you fancy the hike up there from the Cubil chairlift exit wink wink
