Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2016 Feb half term Avios flights

 Poster: A snowHead

Heads up that the outbound London-GVA became available on BA at midnight.

4500 Avios and GBP 17.50 one way on Sat 13th Feb.

Within 10 seconds, about a dozen of the total 72 seats available had already gone, so be quick if you're interested.

The "Cash" flights also came up for sale, but best not to talk too much about the prices for those... Per mile, they must be running the plane on printer ink.

Just to bump my own thread - BA currently have a promotion whereby you can buy avios for 1.1p/point.

This makes it £50 + £17.50 taxes for a one-way, Heathrow-Geneva, at Feb half term next year. Since its BA, this includes 1 hold + 2 cabin bags, and your hold bag can be a ski bag.

I doubt there will be any flights as cheap as this from any other airlines.

Thanks for the heads up. We're going to go somewhere different next year, just haven't decided where yet. Otherwise I'd be booking with avios as this deal is as good as it gets.

Shame they have devalued the Avios scheme a bit in recent weeks, but it's still a scheme we get a lot of value from. As we mostly use ours for longhaul in the school holidays it's going to cost us quite a lot of more points after this year. Tend not to use them for shorthaul, but did use the 4500 points plus £17.50 to book a one way to Lyon for the Saturday of Christmas week as the cash prices were already astronomical.

For those trying to get hard to book Avios flights, bear in mind that BA release their reward seat availability on a daily basis, normally around 1.00am although this can slip to 1.30am. If you are working to specific dates on a route which always sells out the reward seats immediately it can pay to stay up for a few nights until the seats have been released so you can book them straight away.

I always found Zurich good for half term flights.

In some ways they've devalued it recently, but for me the biggest lack of value was the struggle to find flights. Since they've now increased availability and increased redemption rates, its slightly more likely that I'll actually get to spend the Avios which, counterintiutively, makes them more valuable to me.

The recent changes meant that they released 6 seats on every London-Geneva flight last night and I was easily able to book - that wouldn't have been a sure thing previously. However, I agree that the best thing you can do is get 2 west coast US returns in club/first class with a 2-4-1 voucher...

I am currently sitting on 100000+ Avios having had no opportunity to spend yet. I don't organise holidays far ahead enough to ever get availability.. Sad
What's the 2-4-1 voucher? Never heard of that before..

If you have one of the BA amex credit cards, and spend a certain amount within a year, you get a free companion ticket with any redemption.

So, e.g. if you can get London-LA for 100k miles in club, the 2-4-1 lets you take a second person as well. You have to pay the taxes on the second ticket, but need no more miles.

I have not had a look myself but I believe one of the recent changes is that linking flights, from Manchester in our case, are not now included with european flights ?
At the moment if we book Manchester-Lyon it is 4500 avios with the Manchester-Heathrow flight free.

Correct, if you book after 28th April that change will take effect. I think that as long as you book before then, the old terms still apply.

@snowdave, Thanks snowdave, I will have to check out the book before 28th. April thing, I thought the changes had already been made so if they have not that would be good for next year, otherwise it's National Express to Heathrow for both kids !

Thanks... I have a BA Amex.. but apparently need to spend £20000 a year on it for the voucher... It's safe to say said voucher will never be in my hands! Laughing

 You know it makes sense.

The deal with Mrs Gaza that allows me and my son to go skiing again next year was that we go somewhere warm at February half term. Getting the Avios spend at a realistic level meant that the Middle East was the best option. In the run up to Friday 12th/Saturday 13th availability in Club and First to Dubai was reasonable. However, when they released Friday there were only 2 Club seats on 1 flight. As I need 3 that wasn't going to work. I was also going to struggle to redeem my 2-4-1 voucher although I was prepared to book the outbound and inbound for the same day and then hope that the return gave good availability. Alas the 2 seats disappeared quickly so all hope was lost.

However, Qatar fly from Edinburgh to Doha and onwards to DXB so I thought I'd try that. Much to my surprise Qatar release their flights further ahead than BA and the return was almost opened up. I jumped in a grabbed three EDI-DOH-DXB Business Class flights (Economy on the DOH-DXB leg) on Saturday 13th Feb. I called BA today at 8:00 and managed to get the DXB-DOH-EDI Business Class return on Saturday 20th Feb. The good news is Qatar's Tax and Charges are much less than BA (BA were £1750, Qatar are £1030) but the downside is I could not use my 2-4-1 voucher so have spend almost my entire Avios balance. Sad

Qatar fly the 787 Dreamliner from EDI and according to the on-line reviews the Business Class cabin surpasses most other airlines First Class products.

I'm quite pleased with my deal. Return Business Class flights for 3 at £1000, 5 free nights at the Hilton Jumeriah using HHonors Points and a further 2 nights paid at c. £360. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

extra reward seat availability is good in theory, but they will snapped up on the bucket&spade routes as soon as they are released for an additional 20% Avios than before Sad

Agreed about premium cabin long haul routes with a 241 voucher. That's what we've done for the last 10+ years. This summer it's Miami in First (couldn't get Club, so had to spend a few more more miles).

Bump to flag that the return leg (GVA-LON) is now available for the last Saturday of half term, with reasonable Avios availability in Club and a handful of seats in economy.

The cash price is still exorbitant - £284 is the cheapest one-way GVA-LON.
