this weekend, for the first time. No - I'm not worried about snow conditions, but would like some help on the matter of importance we can control... food. If you were only going to have a couple of lunches out on the mountain (hoping to picnic the rest of the time, weather permitting), are there any restaurants that are not to be missed, either in La Ros or La Thuile? We will be with the children, so I'm not talking long boozy affairs, but somewhere with a bit of charm, decent food, relatively accessible i.e. not a hike from a black run, and not of the €20 for a rubbish sausage and chips. Oh, and if there is somewhere for an equivalent evening meal for one night of the week... thanks all!

I've just been once. That was when the € was about parity with the £ and I was v upset to spend £20 on a rubbish spag bol, salad and £0.20 on mayo.
In La Ros I like the little hut at the end of the long run on the left..
otherwise La Thuile which is much cheaper / better.
The hut at the top of the St Bernard is atmospheric.

Just over the border into Italy there is a great restaurant to the left of the piste (IIRC). Also some great pizza restaurants in La Thuile village itself - not far to walk.

La Thuile ... take the far left road piste .... at start of town signposted , a 200m walk from the piste .... Le Rascard .... superb pizzas.

La Thuile much better value and quality than La Rosiere.
There is an excellent mountain restaurant to left of top of Chalets Express chair lift which does superb pizza, prepared and baked to order while you wait. Kids will love it and very accessible.

I do not recall any of the mountain restaurants being great value. I normally just stop for a coffee and water but friends did eat at several of the restaurants. Don't recall any having charm either. Sorry. I am not helping much. Always enjoyed a pint at McKinleys (sp?) at the end of the day. You can catch some rays and its near the kids pay area depending on how small your kids are.

Thanks all - sounds as though the La Ros options might be in short supply. Would love to get the kids over to La Thuile for pizza and hot chocolate but fear it will all depend on how well the smallest Raingirl gets on with lessons next week - I've heard a few horror stories about the drag lifts that link the two.

the best hot chocolate might be in Italy, @rainman, but I'm sure raingirl will enjoy hot chocolate and pizza in La Rosiere, too. My daughter certainly did (I once had to use the promise of a hot chocolate to coax her, turn by turn, down a run in nasty weather after I'd taken her up a long draglift in La Rosiere by mistake, rather than the short one I thought it was going to be). She hung on to the top, bless her, but wasn't happy.
We never made it to La Thuile, even the following year with competent child skiers. My niece, a tough little girl, gymnast and ballet dancer, was lifted clean off her feet by the drag lift. The first time she hung on and managed to keep her skis parallel to the run, and landed it. The second time she fell off, and we all bailed out with her and skied back to La Rosiere. But that was a few years ago (said niece is now a qualified doctor, still a toughie) and maybe the lifts have improved.

The drag lifts are long but not particularly severe and you only need to do one of them. My memory of a really good restaurant in La Thuile was one quite near the bottom of 7 I have just had a look at the piste map and there are actually a couple down there and I cant remember which one but it was very good indeed a few years ago.

A nice traditional hut to visit in La Thuile, take the red 7 almost into La Thuile yiu will see a sign for a restaurant just on the side of the piste, turn left by the sign and walk about 20ft down and you will come to it, very charming and good value, it magnet be called La Tata? For your evening out in Les Eucherts area there's a restaurant with a giant cow outside, the chairs are covered in animal hides, we call it the moo place but I will try and find the name. Traditional French food and pizza etc, reasonable prices but you will need to book. It's called Le Grange!
