I'm looking at 2nd hand skis on ebay and there are a few located in Germany,Poland, Austria etc that post to UK. Most have very good feedback but wondered if there are any drawbacks! I've seen some I fancy from a seller called 'ski-sport' who have 100% feedback. Anybody bought from them? Cheers

Skis located in Germany and Austria are most likely exhire skis. And skis from Poland been bought from Austrian rental shops for roughly 50 Euros per pair and beeing sold as a 2nd hand private ones.

One assumes that they are a really good price, and therefore worth some sort of risk..
having said that eBay do a pretty sound job of policing the traders selling on eBay. if there is subsequently a problem they will help resolve.
I've brought lads of stuff from eBay trades in Europe, including a pair of ex hire Atomic Blackeye skis, trousers, electronics - Never had a problem.

There won't be an issue on account of the trader being based within the Eurozone as opposed to within Britain.
The query would be, as @pytek23 pointed out, the provenance of the skis and thus the expectation that they are unlikely to be single-user, occasional-use second-hand skis. That is only a consideration, mind, and not a reason to discount them altogether. As with almost everything in this day, the 'facts' are in the price.

I bought 2 pairs of almost new GS racing skis from a guy in Budapest. Came exactly as described and well packaged. Price was pretty reasonable. Turned out he was a racer who had been injured in preseason and out for at least a year. Hence the skis were as good as new. I've had some sporadic email contact with him since and he might come to visit us in Sweden for some training now that he is fit again. A nice guy and a real pleasure to do business with. So for me the experience is 100% positive!

I too have bought several pairs from Europe via eBay. Absolutely no problems and the skis arrived serviced.
Can look up the seller if it's helpful.

I bought my skis from an ebay shop based in Germany - no problems (only 15 pounds to ship!!). The more photos, the better..

I bought a pair of skis from poland, they were ex hire and serviced. Cheap, but had been well used. The photos showed the condition and I have no complaints., but look at the photos carefully.

Thanks, for answering. Yes, I'd presume they are ex hire due to the pricing. I'm thinking of getting maybe a couple of hols from them to save hiring and the retire them for the dry slope. Then maybe invest in some new when I'm more confident in choosing the 'right' ski for me.

Most likely, because down here, noone is buying skis, we all just rent them. Therefore there's simply no way anyone down here in Alps would be selling skis, as we simply don't have them.

@Whitty,
I have looked at skis from them and others doing similiar deals ( quite a few of them do a deal of shipping two pairs for the price of one so maybe worth looking at that). Not sure how much use for holidays you would get from them but should be fine for one at least then dryslope/fridge use for a few years.
My preferance was to buy in the UK ( a slalom ski ) and then was going to get two pairs either an all-mountain or freeride and an off-piste that way due to the more specialist use they would last for a few seasons.

Come back "Ski-Bilek" all is forgiven!
Ski Bilek was legend on Ebay, and I bought umpteen skis and bindings from him whilst he was selling.
Never a problem with any deliveries either, all tracked by DPD.

You know it makes sense.

I bought new skis from a shop on ebay who were based in Austria, shipped via DPD rather cheaply I seem to recall.
When I was researching, I looked for the actual shop website, to make sure they were real and had the ski's in stock, if the price is the same no reason not to pay via credit card and buy direct

@skimastaaah, but it wasn't exactly as sustainable business model was it, nice while it lasted, had 4 pairs of rc4's from them for silly cheap money
@pytek23, A friend of mine makes quite a reasonable sum from buying up french hire skis, servicing them in the summer and then selling them to shops in Poland and Bulgaria, and his business is becoming busier every year.

Tried to use Bilek once, but that must have been exactly at the point they stopped selling skis via ebay. Think they were a bike warehouse for a bit longer too. Quite literally "just down the road" from me.
Got my skis from Sport Conrad in the end. Why buy 2nd hand, when you can buy end of season model for half price, and if you do that at the right time of the year, then it's free shipping via UPS Europe-wide.

Exactly........ nice while it lasted. I think he's re-surfaced as another ebay ski dealer based in Germany.

@Zorrac, I know how profitable it can be.I was doing same thing about 10years ago but always been honest about origin of skis and that what lots of sellers do not do these days.

Reading this topic just after reading the one on more tales of mass ski theft at various resorts. Makes you wonder what happens to all those stolen skis and if there is a lot more info the price offered tells you?
