Poster: A snowHead

Hi, any recommendations for some good shell ski pants? I really do want just a wind proof, water proof/resistant shell with very little or zero insulation. I want to be able to regulate temperature by wearing different layers under them so I can have one good pair of pants for all occasions. Many thanks for any input!

Bought some Marmot Spire goretex shell pants on Sportpursuit last year for about £110 and they're great - they're everything you described above and I can confirm there is zero insulation! (it was v cold in Cervinia before xmas!!)

I've had the TNF Free Thinker pants for at least 5 years now. They're brilliant and indestructible.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have both Arc'teryx and Norrona. Both great. I cannot remember the model of the Arc pants, but they are 3L Goretex, while the latter are the Narvik pant. Totally waterproof. Not too baggy, but enough space in be flexible for layering.
Cue Oceanic. I am sure he will be along shortly go provide an endless commentary why insulated is best.

+1 for TNF Free Thinker. I wear a thin base layer under. They have vents on the inner thighs and removable braces. I also recommend Sweet Protection gear - I've not got the pants but have the Crusader jacket and it's top quality. Nearly bought the pants in matching red but thought i'd look like ESF (whilst stationary of course).

I personally don't like the pure shell designs simply because I don't like sweaty skin being stuck straight to goretex shell material. Therefore you might want to consider a little bit of insulation / lining which doesn't add to heat as long as you have ventilation zips available.
Personally my favourite pants by far are my haglofs couloir pro goretex which have inside and outside vents along with a very thin fleece type lining but still very breathable. Awesome kit at a price though - sportpursuit may be your friend.

Thanks for all the replies, plenty of research to do now!
@grazzenger, do those have elasticated gaiters to go over ski boots?

I have some Sweet Protection pants that I got cheap from SportPursuit. In their third season of heavy use, and still going strong. V Happy with them.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Just bought the Marmot Spires for £120 with free postage from bergfreunde.co.uk
It's a German web site so be interesting to see what they're like. Will report back when I get them, I did read around some reviews saying they run large so hope I have got the right size. I'm about (cough cough) a 39" waist when ski fit and got the XL.

I have Arcteryx Theta SV - Very light, thin and minimal features. I also have Norrona Lofoten Pro, which are probably the best featured most indestructible pants you can get, they have brilliant gaiters and zips, removable bib/braces etc. The only potential downside is that they weigh around 1Kg.

Fair enough, although usually people wear something underneath. The idea is that you wear thinner stuff in the spring than in the winter, hence one pair of keks works all season. So there's never skin against Gore-tex.
Personally I use Burton AK or Ride, but then I'm a snowboarder. Generally you get what you pay for in the technical stuff at least.
