Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off Piste Les Arc

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

Staying in Les Arc in March. I have a bit of Off Piste experience but I would like to get some more and even some specific instruction.

Ideally I was looking for week long half day group lessons for off piste but I am having difficulty finding anything suitable.

Just wondering can anybody recommend anything or possibly some alternatives?

I know private lessons are an option but I will be doing it alone so anything more that a half day becomes prohibitively expensive.

Hi @Zatopek, if you visit the Les Arcs season thread here on snowheads or my Les Arcs Winter page on facebook you can find quite bit of info and links to ski schools that offer off piste lessons. You can also PM me for further details of Instructors if you wish. Hope that helps.

ArcAdveture offer 1/2 and full day group lessons. As do the bureau des Guides. You will find both in Arc 1800. I have used both and they are good.

Would you recommend the ESF after the grief they're causing British tour operators?

@Snovillain, why would that have anything to do with what your experience with them will be?

A word of caution as OP said his experience was limited; esf classe 4 is full of very good French skiers who want a serious blast while their kids are in esf kid classes, prior to spending the rest of day on blues slopes with family, in other words, pack absolutely maximum amount of off-piste skiing into 2.5 hours.. Consequently they will move at faster pace than British run introductory off piste classes. The frantic pace has turned off many Brits. They won't be long kicking you out of group if you are not up to it. If you are a good skier you'll be fine but if your experience is limited you could consider classe 3

@peanuthead, I agree that their attitude to the tour operators does not - in itself - infer a general arsiness toward Brits, but I would personally invest in more local ventures like Arc Aventure who have a more inclusive attitude.
Just a personal view.

Yes, ime don't ESF4 in les arcs unless you know your stuff - pretty much straight off the back of the mountain, race about and drop you off dripping just in time to meet the other classes stopping.

Thanks guys. Yes I had that concern about ESF4.

ESF 3 might be better suited. Do they provided transceiver/probe/shovel for level 3 course?

But presumably instructors know terrain like back of their hands and won't bring you anywhere remotely unsafe

A couple years ago we booked an off-piste guide when there were avalanche warnings of 4. He simply took us through the trees to the south of La Combe. But also supplied beepers, shovels etc (and rucksacks)
