Poster: A snowHead

....this is a bit of a hypothetical question but if for example, the resort has 1.5m of snow depth today, how long would it take to melt if the weather was to rise to say zero degrees at night at 5 degrees during the day. I'm trying to understand what the conditions would have to be such that a resort with great snow today could have none, 2 weeks from now.

Most snow sublimated rather than melts. Depends on conditions. A foehn (hair dryer) wind can suck up snow very fast.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@HJD, stop worrying. There will be snow when you get here.

@HJD, it would be pretty unlikely.
My garden in Chamonix still had snow in June. And that had never been pisted (the compaction turns it to more or less ice, which melts much more slowly).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It depends more on the wind and cloud cover than the temperature. I have know it rising to 20 degrees in La Plagne but with absolutely no wind and clear skies at night it went at less than 5 cm a day. On the other hand I saw a metre disappear overnight in Morzine with a temp of just over freezing but a strong foehn.

@johnE, metre of fresh or metre of compacted piste. Never seen 1m of that disappear overnight, hairdryer or not!

Very true in the valley floor, even warm rain won't do that.......BUT up high with realy high winds, that's another story. I've seen the arete Aiguille du Midi cange more in one night than in a calm 6 months, and that was hard packed neve!

@Idris, ahh, yes, good point, but then, up there, things change really rather quickly in both directions, whereas down in the valley, not so much
