There's a difference between blades and short skis. I wouldn't advise blades; they're quite hard on the knees. But short skis, used with poles would be ok if he doesn't want to learn to ski properly
IME instructors don't like them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yup good idea. Put your 63 year old father on blades so he can ski faster down the mountain with no control and every chance of falling over regularly.
Great for adrenaline loving young idiots with fast reactions and no worries about risk. Not such a great idea for an old man who likes the idea of a pootle.
I'd say use normal length skis. If he's going to pootle about at least make him work a bit while he's at it. Physical exercise is actually good for old people, there's no need to try and avoid it. And he'll be more in control and probably happier too.

Fair play @olderscot, I certainly found blades skittish but didn't give them a chance so wondered if I wrote them off prematurely. Certainly I'm looking for him to be in control - I don't want the responsibility of introducing someone behaving unsafely. I'm not sure if he considers himself old yet, even with the free bus pass
And @pam w, thanks also. What intrigued me is that Skiset advertise their 120cm skis with the tagline "I discover easy riding sensations with easy-to-handle safe equipment." so wondered if going shorter again could be a sensible way to go.
I'm sure you're also wondering why I don't just ask in the shop, but I do like to canvas different opinions.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My wife bumbles about quite merrily on 130cm.
They are also really easy to lug around the resort

I tried 4 days on blades (am mid 40s and might have 10 weeks skiing over 20 yrs) and found them skittish, they made me nervous. Hurt my knees too as less shock absorbing.
