Take your pick from about 10 glaciers in Austria; France: Switzerland: or Italy - or go to Chile, Argentina, New Zealand or Australia.
Don't expect brilliant snow in August in the Alps - more a limited skiing, soft-snow, novelty experience for diehard Snowheads (like me ) on the few glaciers (and limited terrain) that are open. Still usually good fun though .
September can be more autumnal/better - though is often a slightly better version of the August description above.
October generally sees the first meaningful autumn snowfall - with winter conditions beginning to be established and good conditions. However, this cannot be guaranteed and conditions (like the first 2 or 3 weeks of last October) can be marginal.
Assuming that a southern hemisphere trip is out, Austria (Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden, Pitztal or Kaunertal) or Switzerland (Saas Fee or Zermatt) would fit the bill in terms of nice resorts with lovely non-ski ambience - although Switzerland is a bit on the pricey side these days.
Tignes in France is good for easy access to the snow (only 7 mins by funicular) but the terrain is a bit more limited than somewhere like Hintertux or Stubai. Of the glaciers listed, I think Hintertux is about the only one that bills itself as 365 days skiing these days - the others have a tendency to close in September. Best to check with each glacier website.
