Poster: A snowHead

Looking for a nice town for an overnight stop en-route to Serre Che.
Between Dijon (not looking to stay there, nice though it is) and Lyon or between Lyon and Grenoble.
Ideally a pleasant town with reasonable hotel options and some typical/charming restaurants for an evening meal.
Beaune, Chalon sur Saone, Macon and Villefranche sur Saone might fit the bill (all between Dijon and Lyon).
Just looking for any recommendations. Thanks.

@Cacciatore, Beaune would be your best option I think . Not a lot between Lyon and Grenoble.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

and it's not all that far; you might as well stay in one of them - Lyon is very nice and I quite like Grenoble, although I know that not everyone does
Beaune is certainly nice

@Arno, I like Grenoble too although my memories of staying there aren't quite so good, as most of it was spent visiting hubby in the hospital.
Beaune to Serre Che is not too bad a journey, we've done it quite often. Can be there in time for lunch if you want to.
Nuits-St-George would be another option.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Beaune is very nice and also easier than some others to find the motorway again

Beaune is nice, it is very handy for the motorway and the IBIS hotel near the centre has a pleasant restaurant, parking and is in walking distance of the old town.

I once had a slightly enforced stopover in Macon; didn't strike me as very interesting, but perhaps I just didn't know where to look.

Lyon itself is a great place to stay, a beautiful city.

Much better choices for restaurants in Beaune than the IBIS hotel though.

Lyon is great I had a long weekend there a couple of years ago. Food is superb particularly if offal floats your boat.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

So, we elected to stay in Beaune. A good decision. Charming town, loads of character and plenty of eating options. Stayed at the Qualys Hotel de la Paix. Highly recommend the place. Only 200m from the town centre and has secure parking. Friendly, decent sized and comfortable rooms.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Can't beat Lyon itself. Beautiful city and all sorts of restaurant options including Paul Bocuse's second tier (Nord, Sud, Est, Ouest) all with different themes and not bank breaking. Not sure where to stay as we have always stayed with friends but you could find a cheap spot just outside and drive in - plenty of pretty central parking in the evening.

You know it makes sense.

We usually stop over in Beaune. @Cacciatore, too late for you as you've now left... But the mustard factory is a nice visit, if only to try the different mustards.
