Does anyone know how you find the best specialist, with the most up to date information, on diagnosis and treatment?
After 10 years of pain and disability, injections, anti-inflammatories, pain killers, osteopathy etc I would really like to find out what is causing the problem.

Failing that, go to the library and see if they have access to searchable BMJ journals (some do, or you may have to go to a larger central library) Search your condition and see who's writing the articles - email them and get recommendations.
You could try contacting the British Orthopaedic Association directly too.

+1. My knowledge of physiology is such that I vaguely thought it would be something to do with shoulders.

Thank you for your replies, and Richard library access to articles may well be the way to go. I had found your online link but it is very difficult to asses capabilities! I know what it says but ...... After many years I am a tad cynical lol Those writing in the BMJ would be of interest, I tried to find info online but kept hitting a wall, however I do know our local library has subscriptions to many things so trying there is worth a go.!

Not much help but I got bursitis in the shoulder following an over enthusiastic day water skiing. Carried it for a year, then the GP cured it with a couple of steroid injections. He said at the time this will be a miracle cure or won't work at all. I understand more qualified doctors now do this targeting the site with scans.

jbob, Steroid injections have helped. One in each hip bursa has enabled me to do some skiing, but sadly the effect is limited and wears off in a few weeks.

A quick update just in case anyone else searches this subject and is as at a loss as I was!
I finally had the right sort of mri scan done at the end of last year, of the right areas, and it turns out the big ligaments that hold everything in place in the pelvis are knackered! lol not the technical term! They are a mass of scar tissue and have lost their elasticity. Therefore muscles have to compensate and do the job the ligaments are supposed to do. Hence the pain and inflammation!
The reason osteopathy has helped is that by untwisting my spine and making sure my pelvis was correctly aligned the muscles had the chance to work optimally!
I am now supposed to do an hour of non load bearing exercise every day, such as aquarobics, pilates or cycling, and avoid long walks, running and going up and down stairs, carrying shopping etc as much as possible. Not easy to achieve, but it was made very clear to me that my long term prospects in respect of mobility and pain would not be good if I do not work on keeping the muscles strong.
My specialist did not think there would be any surgical remedy but I will be keeping an eye on ligament repair research!

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? Bursitis can be worsened by being hypothyroid. Jut an idea - it sounds like you have a convincing diagnosis anyways.

My understanding is that the tendons are now scar tissue rather than functioning tissue, from lots and lots of minor damage rather than a particular definitive tear The damage seems fairly equal on both sides which I'm told suggests overuse rather than specific injury.

The principle of surgery in these conditions is to excise the scar and damaged tendon . thats the easy bit.
Getting a decent repair is very difficult and if it cant be achieved could end up worse off hence why surgery not popular.

Ahh I see, I`d guess too that my age (nearer 60 than 50) is against me given what I have read on knee ligament repairs.
May I ask where you have heard of it being done? Is there a centre somewhere that specialises in this type of repair that you know of? If I could find the right person I would value an opinion.
