Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mayrhofen Off Piste

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi Everyone,

Just booked a late trip to Mayrhofen departing in a week. Any ideas on where to go during powder days? Never snowboarded this area before so any advice to give us a head start would be greatly appreciated.

There is a lot of op available in Mayrhofen some is easy access, some needs a short hike, some is a bit exposed and some is just nuts, but it all gets tracked out pretty quickly so get up early if it is expected.

From the top of the Knorren there are a bunch of reds and blacks heading off over the back, there is plenty of easy access op between the runs great options off blue 20 between the trees, I have marked up a couple of short but fun ones on the right because they don't get tracked out so quickly, you can either head out to the run on the right or if there is deep snow then track directly down under the Nordhangbann, very steep and tricky/short but great when you have an audience above you, bad if you screw it up.

A vid from the bottom of the red line above.

youtube.com/v/JYtxzQ9qLCE

Some pics from about 2001 under the lift towards the bottom of the red line.

Heading round to the right a bit you have the run down from the top of the 150 man gondola. The further to the right the less tracked out it becomes.

Same area from a different angle, there is a nice defined route shown by the line or you can pick your way down anywhere on the circle.

Now looking over to the other side of the valley I'm showing two runs down from the Schneekarhutte on the right. The leftmost is a run down from the top of the 150man and the one to the right of that is from the top of the Horbergjoch.

The dotted circle is for hardcore only, I cant believe how quickly it gets tracked out though, I have never tried it.

The next pic is just after dropping in to the leftmost line from the top of the 150man and the one below that is a bit further into the run.

Next is the entry point at the top of the Horbergjoch just outside the lift.

A vid from this point.

A bit further into the run.

further down there a few buildings to have fun on.

Looking back across the valley to the Horberg mountain, there are good runs here too.

Beware this face tends to slip a lot

and from a different angle

This is a pic from the top of the solid line above. There are good options either side of 27, from the top of the piste looking down you can duck under the rope on the right and go down through the rocks, or as you head down the piste veer off to the left then pretty much parallel to the run as the piste turns right and ride right down past the slalom track and rejoin at the bottom, or from the top of 27 hike along the ridge behind the Unterbergalm lift station the drop into the bowl towards run 27 or over the other side of the ridge down into death valley. This video from Jan 2006 it the point we normally hike to.

and after dropping in.

Back up the Horbergjoch lift you can track down under that too.

Now that is just a small sample of what is available either directly from lift or within a few mins walk of a lift. But take care as avalanches do occur in these areas, particularly up death valley.

Now when you head up to the top of the Finkenberg lift there is a black 12, its not black, but there are lots of great options between that and red 13.

Now on to the last two pics, the bottom one is from Easter last year, the other is a stock pic I found.

This mountain has no lift so these guys must have hiked for half a day to get there, but it looks worth it.

Back when I was in Mayrhofen I bought a map of the local area and saw that there was a ski route marked on that mountain in the last picture. I didn't believe anyone would seriously ski it, but one day in the spring from outside Scotties I was sure I could see tracks down there. Until seeing this post from JimboS I've never been sure whether I imagined it or not! Thanks JimboS!

Just off the top of the 150 is my fav route by far, there's a track that brings you to the back of the park then. Get there early though. Another obvious one is straight down from the 20/2, go in a direct line and you'll hit the 20 again a couple of times

There's a lesser known route, can't remember where exactly but can dig it out, take a left at a 'hut' down through a tree route. Will bring you through the forest on a mtb track, you'll eventually hit the road and need to flag the bus to get back. Snow coverage was poor on this route last year

@tim000, looks great conditions. I assume you had checked the risk of avalanche as level -1 at your altitude and aspects...and so decided to leave all your safety kit at home before venturing off piste ?

 You know it makes sense.

i assume just another person who does't give avalanches a second thought.

Great video there showing the variety of the terrain, shows why I just cant get enough of Da Hoff. I can understand the comments from the L & F above, however all the areas shown in the vid above get completely tracked out within half a day (by hundreds if not thousands) every time there is a dump of snow but I have never heard of a single avalanche death there.

Would be interested to hear from the experts as to whether everyone is just being lucky or is the terrain in the vid is low risk? Big slips are common down the steep sides of Death Valley but most punters don't hike along to these areas. The far wall in the distance in the vid below slips a lot and you do see lots of silps on the other walls down the valley but the don't seem to reach the normal ski areas.

Youtube does show a few people getting caught in small slips but nothing that hits the news.

Are they just lucky in the Valley of Death?
