Due to go skiing in 5 weeks and my son broke a bone in his foot on Friday !😣😣. Doc says to take moonboot cast off in 4. Weeks. Said it would be ok to ski but may be too painful! Gutted not sure if he will be ok or to cancel. Any advice?

How old is he @Flowertot, ??? Little ones heal quite quickly. Bigger ones, not so...

@Flowertot, what a shame..... might be insurance complications, you'd need to declare it.
Snowboarding boots might be easier. An opportunity to learn a new discipline. Could you postpone, rather than cancel?

Flowertot, I have skied with a broken toe, it was less painful in ski boots than normal shoes.

@Flowertot, I fractured my metatarsal in July (thankfully) 2013. I was in a cast for 2 days but switched to an orthopedic boot (rubber sole / stars) straight after. I had to wear it for 8 weeks but was allowed to take it off after 5, it was still painful though for a bit after that ...
I'm thinking (and I really hope not) it may be painful for him to squeeze his foot into the boot - plus it may cause long term damage which he will regret. I would definitely recommend seeing a physio who specialises in sports injuries asap, they should come up with a tailored recovery / rehab programme which should help.
Good luck to him!

Thanks everyone, he is 12 (nearly 13!) so keeping fingers crossed. Going to contact insurance to let them know. The doctor said he wouldn't do any more damage, but it may be sore. Considering getting him fitted for his own ski boots if we go rather than hiring as at least they would be a proper fit?? Also will look into postponing but it would mean waiting until next Feb as we are already booked up for Easter. Keeping hoping he heals quickly, will look into the sports physio though, thanks.

Not sure about that. His feet are probably growing like weeds. If anything, with a sore toe, I might want to go for slightly roomier boots than I'd want for peak performance.
I have arthritic toes, from time to time, which are better in ski boots than in more flexible footwear because the joints don't move.
You can still get some rear entry style boots which might be less sore for putting on.
Or snowboarding boots....

Hi, it's the side of his foot not his toe, would that make a difference

I'm certainly of the opinion that he should consider snowboarding this holiday...the boots are much more comfortable...

@Flowertot, I would imagine that getting boots on (and so soon after cast comes off) is going to be the most painful bit. On another thread I noted a helpful snowHead's advice about these.....
http://www.slippinltd.com/
I bought one last week as I am recovering from ankle fractures - I used it straightaway to try getting into a high sided walking boot which was very successful and very pleased to have it ready for when I start skiing again

As long as he can get his foot into the ski boot he should be fine.
once in there will be good support with very little movement of the foot.
do your research on the local hire shops, find one with good selection of boots, some just take your size and give you a pair of boots.
others will check dimensions of different parts of the foot and find a boot that is close to the correct shape
@igLou, good idea about the slipin

@igLou, Well, you could chop a big one up into small bits and flog it to SHs - not enough for a chalet but maybe a few vin chauds?

@Flowertot, how big was the break? I broke fourth metatarsal couple of years back - but didn't realise for 2 weeks. my break was a 'clean' fracture thro the bone, ended up getting it pinned as after 2 months of _no special treatment_, perhaps unsurprisingly it hadn't healed.... 2 months in a moonboot more to prevent the pin moving whilst the bones joined.
Up to you/your son how much it hurts _now_, and to gamble on it hurting less in 4 weeks, but in the grand scheme of things it's a 'minor' fracture.
(presuming it hasn't punctued the skin etc....)
your choice at teh end of the day - but I spent 2 days wakeboarding, and a week on a watersports holiday, between fracture and diagnosis, with no long term effects, and I'm an adult (age, at least)
kids feet heal much faster - If' he's a 'young man', I'd tell him to brave it....

Thanks, I have spoke to another orthopedic surgeon and he says it wasn't a bad break so keeping everything crossed.

If he can get a boot on that will give support but it is likely to swell and be fairly uncomfortable when the boot comes off at the end of the day.
Ice it three or four times in the evening and elevate the foot for the whole evening and that may make the diffrenece bewteen him being able to ski the following day and being too painful/swollen
