Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

HELP - Geneva Flights Booked for This Weekend!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I wonder if anyone can help, I have some flights booked to Geneva this weekend and been holding off getting accodation until I got some good snow reports but everything I read about within a reasonable radius of Geneva seems to have pretty poor snow, can anyone recommend any resorts that are currently good or expect to get good before the weekend?

Any input appreciated, i was hoping to go to Morzine but it seems to be either hard packed or wet.

Thanks in advance,

G

Very little snow forecast before the weekend at the moment. We have plenty of snow in the Espace Killy for extensive piste skiing -but I appreciate its a long way for a transfer if you only have a couple of days.

Chamonix may have some snow at the weekend , and is high enough to keep it

Our clients in Chamonix report excellent snow. I expect not so much below 1,800m, but then most skiing in Cham is above that.

Les contamines is likely to have as good snow as anywhere in the vicinity of Geneva. But it's a poor start to the season, for sure. Might be worth making the effort to get to the Espace killy.

@pam w, how interesting. In 8 seasons of "you must ski Les Contamines" we haven't. What's the first thing I see under "Domain"?

A simple and clear piste map with lift status - most operating - and most start and end altitudes marked.

@greido, so, most of Chamonix open and mostly above 1,900 so decent amounts of fresh arrived at the weekend.

Most if Les Contamines open and looks mostly above 1,500-1,600 so probably got some rain at the weekend lower down.

Flaine, Avoriaz themselves will have done fine so if just for a weekend also worth considering but anything below will have got a bit wet so possibly a bit limiting maybe for a week. All that said, the pisteurs have been working wonders.

The weekend does look like being rainy at times even at 1600m. I think I would head for Tignes given the current forecasts.

Verbier's got great snow above 2000m and below that everything's open, just a bit hardpacked.

I appreciate that one man's long transfer is another man's pop but I wouldn't call the typical drive from GVA to Tignes of two and a half to two and three quarter hours too long to rule out a short trip. Especially for what is (more often than not) France's best snow conditions - we've done it for one night/2 days in Tignes wink.

It's like spring. Very warm, sketchy snow cover melting fast. Delightful, if you are sitting in the sun having lunch but not if you,ve spent a lot for a weekend skiing. Fair bit of precipitation forecast and some high freezing levels. The weekend could be fairly horrible at resort level in most places.

In fact the snow cover is nothing like as good as easter normally is.

@greido, can you change your flights? The weather looks pretty grim at most resort levels and potentially strong winds restricting higher skiing.

@zzz, good point about the wind - that won't really affect us, so I'd not paid much attention to it, but it certainly looks breezy.

Hi. I'm in the same boat really. I have flights to Geneva booked tomorrow and return on Sunday. I've got a cheap hotel booked in Megeve but will write this off if necessary. So I have two days skiing. Friday and Saturday. I've got time to drive after and before the flights, so where's my best bet of an enjoyable weekends skiing? Will megeve be skiable at all(8 degrees Saturday, 5 Friday!)? Where's the best option within 5 hours Geneva? Thanks all...... Puzzled Puzzled Puzzled

@stevelynsey, there haven't been many reports about what might be open in Megeve. If you are based there maybe Les Contamines or Les Saisies would be fairly easy drives and probably have more open than Megeve. Easy drives, and this is a quiet week.

But Tignes would be a lot better and a lot less than 5 hours drive, too.

Ok I think we're going to head for tignes. Where is best to stay lavachet or val claret. Having written off our hotel in Megeve were on a tight budget now.... Any suggestions?

Both equally accessible as is Le Lac - if you are price sensitive go for the cheapest in any of the 3 main villages - any lower is still a bit hit and miss.

We eventually decided to cancel the trip due to snow conditions and weather forecasts.
