Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm staying in Superdevoluy for a week starting this Saturday & have just been informed by my TO that the piste there will not be opening. I'm thinking about going for day trips to either Vars/Risoul, Serre Chevalier, Montgenevre, Orcieres or any other place that may be suggested. Where is the snow best? Which resort will be easiest to get to & have reasonable conditions? I'll be using public transport. Any tips & up to date info will be greatly appreciated.

@gary, will your TO not be bussing you there themselves?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I only got the accommodation (including lift passes) + the equipment hire through the TO. I arranged the flights & transfers from Marseille airport. Orcieres is the nearest resort, but I don't know much about it., Lots of people on here seem to know about Serre Chevalier though.

@gary, if you can get transport to Serre Chevalier, there will be a reasonable amount of skiing on the higher slopes next week. According to Serre Che's Facebook page, there's 100cm of natural snow at 2800m, and there will be at least 50 pistes open. Sorry, I misunderstood TO for tour operator and not tourist office.
Can you cancel your transfers and get car hires instead? It would be easier to travel around if you can. Trains to Briancon are not fast.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Just had a look for a train timetable for you http://www.virail.com/train-veynes-briancon/2014-12-22 . There is then a shuttle from Briancon station to the lifts in a few minutes. If you chose to go to Montgenvre you will have another half hour. Risoul/Vars will be closer for you.

@gary, will you get a refund on your lift passes, or can they be used in Serre, which I doubt ?
I think it's going to be very very busy here next week, I don't know what the status is on Puy, Risoul and Vars etc but of they are not open or very limited then people from there will be coming up here.
Best strategy would be to but the three hour lift pass which can be used at any time of the day, but start at Noon when they all feck of for lunch!
I had it confirmed to me today when I was buying a lift pass for my daughter (three hour one) when I questioned the 70% figure, I was told it was in fact only 70% of the top sector that was open, which figures.
Anyway if the weather stays like this (Spring like) the restaurants will be happy!
I'll be posting some photos etc later on in the Serre thread.

@Weathercam, they won't be able to use their lift passes in Serre. I would hope they won't be charged for them if the resort doesn't open. They weren't part of the Grande Galaxy anyway, and that has been suspended until further notice. Fingers crossed for a change in the forecast.
