Due to changes in my work commitments, I suddenly find myself in the possition of being able to go on holiday tomorrow (Wednesday 17th), having to be back in this country on chrsitmas eve. The obvious plan is to get in the car and drive to some mountains, but where. I guess the snow is in Italy (Cervinia?), or Austria. What do you recomend? Any offers of accomodation considered, I do not need much if you are near snow!

Cervinia is the place but everyone is going there. I had an email from someone there now who says it is mega busy.

About half the Espace Killy is open - relatively busy on the slopes today as vis was limited but no lift queues.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Re. Espace Killy, that would be a lot closser than Italy or Austria. That is very tempting if it is open, how is the snow?

I got back yesterday from a 4 day trip to Val Thorens and Les Arcs. Les Arcs was pretty limited in terms of open lifts and pistes but VT was in very good shape with most lifts running. I was actually quite surprised at how good the slopes were; some were still closed but most seemed open. The Folie Douce was open too, which was a bonus.

@hughbedo, There's more detail on the Tignes Snow Report thread which I am just about to write for today. On the pistes that are open the snow is good in general - there are a few stones abut on exposed ridges but generally good. Off piste (like the rest of France) is really a non starter apart from the odd bit just off the side. The resort is also in full swing if apres/shopping is important.

Interesting. There is a reasnoble deal on accomodation in Tignes, so I may just take that.

Norway's a good call. Lots of snow there. Get a flight with Norwegian Air and hire a car.

After exampining drivuign times, as well as the snow reports forum, I am thinking about Scotland. It seems the snow is better, and it is a lot less of a drive. Any thoughts?

I live in Edinburgh so can drive 2.5 hours to all resorts - the snow up here can be good but the weather is so shitty and inconsistent you cant guarantee to ski.
If you can get to the Alps - I would go

@hughbedo, despite being a big fan of Scottish skiing, I suggest not, unless you already live in Scotland and can go for a day trip. The weather forecast is poor for the next few days (e.g. Cairngorm wind speeds up to 60mph every day until Sunday at the earliest) so there's a high chance of lifts being shut. The three open centres currently only have limited runs open anyway - it's still very early season so less than 10km open at each.
Scotland's snow might be currently better than somewhere like Morzine / Megeve, but not as decent as somewhere high in the Alps like Cervinia / Zermatt / Tignes / Val Thorens / glacier resorts. But it's the windy weather forecast that you should be most worried about.

I can recommend Saas-Fee for a few days, snow conditions are currently good down to resort level. You might get bored though if planning a full week trip. Transfer is a breeze from Geneva, via train and bus.
