Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi I am a beginner at ski trips and have booked Zell am see with crystal ski leaving on the 20th December. Having read this read and the general consensus that there will be no snow, can anyone tell me if the ski operators make provision for this in any way?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The Kitzsteinhorn glacier is in the same ski area as Zell am See and Kaprun, with ski buses between them included on the lift pass. So I'd guess that is where you would go in this case. Otherwise tour operators will bus people to areas with snow or even change the holiday to a resort that has skiing, dependant on availability, spaces etc.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Xmasski, but the glacier areas will be horribly crowded over Christmas if snow conditions elsewhere remain poor (see current report on Les Deux Alpes, for example). BUT - there could well be snow before then (fingers crossed). I'd wait till the last minute (ie last 48 hours) and don't get fooled by tour operators versions of snow reports which are going to be optimistic, to put it politely.

ah sorry - just read more carefully and see that you've booked...... but it's a beautiful spot and even if snow isn't great, if you're with a ski school you'll be OK.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I joined this forum in 06 (another pig of a start to a season) when we were headed to Zell am see.
I was worried on the drive up but we had a great week - conditions that week were 40cm top 0cm valley and I made it to the town on the artificial stuff!
My family were beginners that week - you won't need a large amount and some of the best slopes for beginners are at the top.
We also managed a trip on the last day over to Kaprun (Kitz) ... it was a bit busy but ok!

As a beginner you should have the best of the conditions. The nursery slopes should be covered and no more crowded than usual for that time of year.
IIRC Zell has the easier slopes at the top of the mountain as well where conditions should be better.

Good news. Just looked at the Schmittenhohe webcams. Today people are skiing on the top runs!! Hopefully the snow will stay and we will get more soon (not sure what is forecasted for the next week or two).
Typically the skiing will be limited to a few runs at the start of the season. Should be OK for a beginner.
