Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi,
I'm taking my wife skiing for the 1st time this Jan. Based on experience I know she will be much better off going for private lessons over ski school but obviously a whole week of private lessons is pretty pricey. So basically I have a few questions
1 who si the best in Val?
2 who is the cheapest?
3 will any of the smaller places offer a discount for taking a whole week of private lessons?
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated!
Cheers

TDC very good .... but all pricey .... and catastrophically so for a whole week .... which is probably unnecessary as there will be much teaching that will require practise.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

My Mrs had a couple of lessons with a German guy called Stefan, having been left on the mountain on her first 20 minutes by a larger ski school and in a right state. Can't offer more info than that, other than he lived in Tignes (3 yrs ago) and must have been very good with nervous beginners!

@Tange, the ski schools that have small (6 or less) groups should be fine for group lessons. BASS Val d'Isere, for example. But don't delay to book.
One problem with private lessons, for fewer hours, is that she probably won't want to practise alone, which will either mean you being very self-sacrificing of your own ski time, staying with her on runs she has done with her instructor and keeping your suggestions to yourself OR risking some big problems.
One to one private lessons could be a little bit lonely and intimidating for a complete beginner because she only has an expert skier to compare herself to. In a group you can generally have a bit of a laugh and there's usually somebody worse than you. You learn from each other, and from the different feedback given to others.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Tange, It is expensive but I'd say private lessons are worth it, so I'd bite the bullet.
One way of reducing the amount of lessons needed to save £'s is to do a learn to ski in a day course at a snowdome before you go. At least then she will have a grasp of the basics, you could then book say first 3 days of morning private lessons, meeting her at lunchtime and then spend all day with her on the last few days.
It all depends how patient you are and how quickly she picks it up - you'll only find that out on your trip
The choice of instructor makes a MASSIVE difference, I struggled with an ESF guy that spoke hardly any English, then I found Steve Angus after which I really progressed. I'd recommend him and he posts on here.

I used Oxygene In January and have booked with them again for next Jan. I'd recommend private lessons though I learned way more than in ski school

I wasn't planning on doing all day for the whole week but rather 4 or 5 morning sessions. When I went for the 1st time I did ski school for my 1st week but started having private lessons on my 2nd trip and you cant compare the progress you make. I am happy to spend the afternoons with her helping her, made easier by the fact I am going with someone that is a qualified ski instructor whose partner is also a beginner and he will have to spend the afternoons with him. Unfortunately they cant have private lessons together because he has a disability which means he needs a specialised teacher.
I am happy for her to go with ski school but she doesn't mind not being with the group but she wants to progress as quickly as possible.
What are the chances of getting a discount for a block booking of private lessons?
