Poster: A snowHead

When the Aspen Skiing Company - which operates Aspen, Snowmass and Buttermilk in Colorado - approached the US Forest Service for permission to carry advertising on its chairlifts their decision rested on how a safety bar is defined.
The US forests (on which many American ski areas operate) are regarded as sacred spaces, free of commercialism. And, as this report from Rocky Mountain News explains, there are vocal groups who want things to stay that way. But the authority concerned took an interesting compromise view:
Quote: |
The [US Forest Service's] Washington, D.C., office issued an interim ruling saying that ads for products and services are acceptable inside buildings and other "interior spaces" operated by concessionaires or permit holders in national forests. The directive defined the safety bars of chairlifts as an interior space. |
So now we know - an exterior surface becomes an interior space!

As the story says, the upside is that the advertising covers the cost of putting trail maps on to the safety bars (next to the ads), or so Aspen claims; so there is arguably a benefit to the consumer.
The story says that Beaver Creek is "on private property" - that's only true for a very small part of the ski area. Most of it is on White River national forest lands.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Does Colorado have anti-smoking laws Martin Bell, ?
If so that might mean that smoking might be banned on chairlifts as they are now "interior space" - great news!

Martin Bell, i see elsewhere that the lift tickets at aspen are now $81 per day. would have thought that could cover a few maps on the lifts!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Getting back to definitions, I'm tempted to open a genuine interior space in Aspen - a drinking saloon, in fact - and calling it 'Safety Bar'.

Aspen was reported on, by Channel 4 news tonight. Covered the ecologically sound efforts that the resort is taking to manage pollution. Lots of shots of snow cannons working, but, we are told, these are much better than the old cannons. Their actions were being contrasted with the lack of effort by the Gov't to curb pollution. Nothing about chairlift safety bars though

Nick L, when I was living in Colorado, it was up to each county. Summit County (Breck, Keystone, Copper) banned smoking indoors, Eagle County (Vail, BC) didn't. Not sure about Pitkin County (Aspen).
