Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone would mind giving me some advice about Ruka? I've had a quick search, but all I can find is threads from at best 5 years ago.

I'm looking at booking a trip along with 5/6 other skiers in January, we've got a fairly good price, there's just a few things that worry me.
First is the size of the resort, my first ever ski trip was to Borovets, which wasn't actually that bad, as a beginner it was fine and we were really lucky with the
snow, but after that I never really saw myself going back to that size resort, let alone one that is less than half the size (in terms of lengths of runs) like Ruka. The last couple have been in large French/Andorran resorts. Are we likely to be a little bored after half a week?

Seeing as the runs are between only 300 and 500m, I imagine we'd be using lifts a lot, what are the queues like?

Apparently the average temperatures for January are -14, does that sound about right? I imagine wind chill would be an issue too. What are the chances it will actually be colder, I'm not sure if anyone would really fancy that...

I've read there's a fair bit of other things to do in the resort apart from skiing, I don't think we're *too* interested in that, but what are the bars and restaurants like? An old thread mentioned they were expensive, but that was years ago, I can imagine it's worse now though! Usually we'll go to a lively-ish resort with a few places to choose from.

For most of us this will be our 4th or 5th week, a couple have done slightly more, we're all comfortable on most slopes, although one or two don't quite fancy black slopes just yet. We're all in our 20s if that makes any difference...

Any thoughts are much appreciated! Thanks.

Hi and welcome to snowHead

I can't be specific about Ruka, but I can answer a couple of your questions - my first ever ski trip was to Iso Syöte, about 2 hours from Ruka, and that was a January.

A few things... Slope hours are much shorter because of the dark, except for a few floodlit evenings, so expect to be done by 3 pm. Yes, it is cold (varied from about -5 to -15 daytime when we were there), so have plenty of layers, good gloves and a buff or balaclava. They are used to dealing with the cold though, and have shelters with fires going where you can warm up. Check the lift set up online if you can - where we went there were only button lifts and t-bars, so that's where the cold sets in. Queues only occurred at the weekend, when the locals turn up.

I think Ruka is a bit bigger, so there will be a bit more skiing and possibly entertainment, but personally I would be looking at somewhere a bit bigger and livelier, like the UCPA places in France.
