Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Balcony ski storage

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have an apartment in a ski resort which does not have ski storage. I want to place a locker on my small balcony so I can store our skis for a few days per month when we are there. However I am concerned about the deep freeze at night and also moisture freeze on the skis and bindings.

Is this advisable to have a locker outside to store our skis ?

You may find that you are not covered by your insurance even if the skis are secured. We had some stuff stolen from our balcony and the insurance company refused to pay out despite it being on the 5th floor and a police report saying that the thieves has accessed the balcony by climbing the balconies! As for the environmental conditions in a locker, they will be pretty similar to those in an unheated ski depot, so I can't see it being any more detrimental to the skis and bindings as in a ski depot with no heating.

What is more important is keeping the temperature regular. You don't want them having water on them then freezing etc. So dry them off well before storing them. Then you will be okay. In my previous life, I spent every Winter in Norway, we left our skis outside for the whole 3 months. Never an issue.

Puffhead, i've also had skis stolen from balcony - but unlike Samerberg Sue, we were on 1st floor, and on retrospect access wasn't actually that difficult.

Puffhead, these are your skis you're talking about.

Get them their own room in the apartment and make the family crash in the living area! rolling eyes

Puffhead, let's just think about a ski's normal operating environment...

A wee bit damp and cold going to do anything to them? That doesn't happen when you ski on them?

Puzzled

Get one of these. Secure it to the wall (perhaps some discretion required). Padlock on front.

Add drainage holes on base and ventilation holes to and bottom of doors with these

Can also be used to store unruly children when excessively unruly.

I've kept skis on the balcony for years with no problems, but try and dry them and keep them waxed. Theft is an issue and I've heard of stuff going missing in Chamsud. I place mine so you can't see them from the ground.

At most refuges our skis are left outside in a rack overnight. They can be at over 3000m and it usually drops well below freezing at night. We've never had a problem yet. However, I do spend a little time getting all the snow out of the binding and wiping off as much water as I can. There's usually some sort of cloth to be found somewhere.

Security is not an issue in a refuge though.

Much of the winter, atl least weekens and trips, ours are on the roof of the car.

altis, someone had their boots pinched from the goutier hut last summer and needed a heli ride back to town!!
under a new name, one place I've found not good for skis is sitting in a puddle in the roof box, it speeds up rusting.

Ours sit on the garden floor (with a gate) terrace and have done so without incident for the last 12 winters. Initially we used to thread a chain through them, but soon abandoned that as too much faff.

Very safe area, though.

They don't seem to suffer at all.

Considering skis are meant to be used only at +20c and in perfectly dry conditions, yes, cold and moisture can damage them.
Seriously, think just a little bit, and then think again. Snow is what? Warm and dry?
